Lesson 8. Choosing job

Exercise 1.Read the proverbs, translate them and make up a story to illustrate it.

Exercise 2. Guess the professions.

1. I work in an office. I type letters and answer the phone.

2. I go to court and defend people’s rights.

3. I work in a hospital and take care of sick people.

4. I work in a school and help people learn.

5. You pay me when you buy something at the store.

6. I take care of sick animals.

7. I put out fires.

8. I wear a uniform and a badge. I help keep your neighborhood safe.

9. I help keep your teeth clean.

10. I deliver letters and packages to your home.

Choosing the right career can be difficult, but there are some prompts that can help you to cope with this task.
Consider your dream career. There is an old saying that if you’re trying to choose a career, you should think about what you would do if you didn’t have to work. If you had a million dollars and you could do anything, what would you do?

You know that even the richest people in the world work every day because life without job is boring. The person can be degraded very soon. One rich man says: «I keep working because it is vitally important for me. I enjoy solving different problems every day. It gives me much pleasure. The more you taste success, the more you want it. It’s like blood in the water for a shark, but not as dangerous for swimmers. And if you have beloved job and get enough money for it you are lucky. Nowadays the scientists say that people must change career every five years in their life in order to develop themselves. And one can say that there is such a tend in the USA. »

Here are some questions that can help you making the right decision.

  • Where do I want to get to in life?
  • What kind of lifestyle do I want?
  • How important is job satisfaction to me?   
  • What do I like/dislike doing?
  • What interests me? (You may have hobbies you could turn into a career.)   
  • What am I good at?
  • What could I be good at if I tried it or worked harder?

  2. There are a lot of prompts that can help you to make a right decision.
  3. A lot of rich people in the world keep working because they like to feel success every day.
  4. The person without beloved job is very lucky.
  5. They say that it is important to change job every five year.

Exercise 6. Discussion.

Hi! My name is Tom. My father is a millioner. Every week he gives me 100 dollars. Many of my friends start working at part-time jobs. I am lucky because I need not do this. And I can buy myself everything I want. I am not even worrying about choosing a career. It does not matter for me at all.



 

What do you think of Tom?

Is he really lucky?

Is he clever and industrious?
