The Manifesta Biennial is one of the world’s leading contemporary art events and was initiated in response to the new social, cultural and political reality that emerged in the aftermath of the Cold War. Every two years the event is hosted by a different European city. Manifesta aims to investigate and reflect upon current developments in contemporary art and each edition does so within the context of location and a specific curatorial theme. Previous editions of the Manifesta Biennial have taken place in Rotterdam (Manifesta 1, 1996), Luxembourg (Manifesta 2, 1998), Ljubljana (Manifesta 3, 2000), Frankfurt/Main (Manifesta 4, 2002), San Sebastian (Manifesta 5, 2004), Nicosia (Manifesta 6, 2006 cancelled) Trentino (Manifesta 7, 2008), Murcia (Manifesta 8, 2010) and Genk (Manifesta 9, 2012). Previous editions have involved prominent artists, curators, young professionals and trainees from as many as 40 different countries allowing them to take part in a unique project, to collaborate with internationally renowned professionals and to gain knowledge and experience in the domains of curatorship, art practice as well as cultural management. Manifesta strongly invests in capacity-building and knowledge exchange. Every two years it transfers its knowledge and network to a new local team through dedicated workshops and seminars and by actively integrating local teams into the operations of presenting that edition. Furthermore, Manifesta invests significantly in its Education Programme, which contributes considerably to the overall understanding of every edition, providing the host region with a structure for education, academic research and professional training.
Manifesta 10 Communications and Education
This Manifesta edition will take place in the world-renowned State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The 120-day exhibition and education programme developed for local and international communities, will play on a dialogue between a historical collection and a contemporary exhibition. The programme will also establish nodes of activity beyond the site of the biennial. Our aim is to create long-term sustainable relationships that encourage a shared space for thinking, innovation, experimentation and new ideas.
The Communications department is responsible for overseeing all communications including PR, media relations and marketing. Manifesta 10 will be implementing an extensive strategic media and marketing campaign that will promote and publicise all elements of the project’s exhibition, public programs,
performances, events and activities. This includes a comprehensive public relations campaign with dedicated teams focusing on Russian, German-speaking and international media. An extensive marketing program will include media partners, online tools including a dedicated website and social media strategy, cross-promotions, direct marketing and mail, a 10-month promotional touring program to target media and industry, a significant outdoor campaign of billboards, posters, signage and promotional/information centres in St. Petersburg, brochures, publications (including a free guide and other publications), materials targeting segmented markets such as arts professionals, cultural tourists, visitors to St. Petersburg and the Hermitage Museum, regional campaigns that will reach into neighboring countries and Europe-wide, and a specific focus on invitations to key individuals (media, art-world notables and past and present participating artists to join the celebrations of the organization’s 20th anniversary and the Hermitage’s 250th anniversary.
The education programme creates a platform for multiple perspectives to be valued and shared, creating a space for exchange and dialogue. The programme of special education initiatives will be far-reaching in terms of engaging existing audiences but also developing new audiences to contemporary art through collaborative projects, talks, workshops, tours and digital platforms. This programme is developed in dialogue with artists and specific target groups.
Manifesta attracts diverse audiences locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. We want to be far-reaching in creating a sustainable impact on how visitors engage with contemporary art and society. The programme provides visitors to Manifesta 10 the opportunity to have a meaningful engagement with contemporary art.
