Day 3 - The one and only Jesus.

Icebreaker: Counting Game (Have everyone in your group pair up and face each other. Each person holds up zero to ten fingers behind their back. On the count of three, have them pull their hands from behind their backs. The first person to yell out the correct sum of all the fingers wins. Do best two of three. Then the winners play each other until you have a champion.)

Bible Story:

What is something new you have learned in English?

If you could ask Jesus one question, what would it be?

Introduction

Yesterday, Jesus made His purpose known to His followers of who He is, His purpose for living, and the cost and reward for following Him. He also talked about the suffering He will endure by men. Jesus’ purpose in everything He does and everything He commands is to bring glory to God the Father. He created us because it pleases Him and He loves us unconditionally. He is worthy to be praised and able to be trusted if we choose to give our lives over to Him. He knows us inside and out and knows what is best for us. Jesus is God. Him and the Father are one. Today, we see the glory of Jesus revealed as God.

Read Mark 9:1-8

1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

2 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.

3 And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.

4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.

5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

6 For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.

7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

8 And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.

The events taking place in the transfiguration of Jesus before His disciples gives us just a small glimpse of what heaven or, the “kingdom of God”, will be like.

· Other than Jesus, who also appeared?

· Describe the elements of what the disciples saw and heard?

· Does seeing Jesus in dazzling white clothes fulfill any images you had of Jesus? Why or why not.

· What can we learn from the words GOD spoke from the cloud to Peter, James, and John?

· If you were with Jesus and you witnessed this, do you think you’d also be frightened like the disciples?

Conclusion- Jesus allowed His disciples a glimpse into His eternal glory and the glory of God the Father. The disciples believed in who Jesus was before without even needing a sign. The suffering of Jesus as a man and the glory of Himself as God are simultaneous and both are true to be fulfilled in order for us today to have salvation. It was not yet Jesus time for the world to know who He really is and why He came, which is why He kept telling His disciples on several occasions not to tell anyone what they saw. Jesus wanted His faithful followers to see His glory revealed as God and the glory that awaits them in heaven. What a day that will be!

Communication Activity:

Today, we talked about Jesus transfiguration. Everyone up until this point had seen Him only one way, as a man, but up on the mountain God TRANSFIGURED Him into the likeness of God the Father- the glory of Himself! Today we are going to talk about other types of change and learn some new words that you may not know that are synonyms for change.

*Pass out word sheet and give everyone a few minutes to look over the words and definitions.

*Pass out 7 notecards and pencils

*Show one picture at a time and ask each student to write down on the note card the word they think best describes the picture. After a minute have everyone hold up their card and see if it’s right.

Words:

-Metamorphose- change completely in form or nature (butterfly)

-Transfigure- transform into something more beautiful or elevated (girl with/without makeup)

-Revamp- give new and improved form, structure, or appearance to (before and after of kitchen)

-Revolutionize- change (something) radically or fundamentally (cancer cure)

-Alter- change or cause to change in character or composition, typically in a comparatively small but significant way

-Tweak- improve (a mechanism or system) by making fine adjustments to it
