Physical Engineering Institute of the UFU

Physical Engineering Institute of the UFU was founded in 1949. Its foundation is connected with the demand for highly-qualified specialists in the new fields of engineering, that is with the wide program of the development of atomic industry.

PEI occupies a separate study building (namely the 5th study building) housing many specialized laboratories. The equipment in some of the laboratories is really unique. Several labs were reconstructed last year and now students have at their disposal modern instruments and devices to do experiments. Besides various laboratories there are well-equipped computer classrooms and lecture halls at the faculty.

Future specialists for many branches of our industry are trained at the following departments: Rare Metals and Nanotechnologies, Molecular Physics, Experimental Physics, Theoretical Physics and Applied Mathematics, Social Security, Computer Science, etc.

Many leading specialists - former graduates of the faculty - work in all branches of our economy, at academic institutions and scientific research institutes of the Russian Academy of sciences. The names of many academicians and professors can be mentioned in connection with the history of the faculty: S.V.Vonsovsky, E.I.Krylov, M.V.Smirnov, A.K.Sharova and others.

PEI provides its students with deep fundamental knowledge in the field of physics and mathematics. Students of the faculty take part in various academic contests and traditionally win prizes. There is a Student Scientific Society at the faculty and many senior students do their own research under the supervision of professors and associate professors.

Students of the faculty do not only study, they also take an active part in different extra-curricular activities. They can join student construction teams ("Quark", "Argo", etc.); become members of sport societies or dance groups. Besides for those who like theatre and languages there's a good opportunity to master a foreign language and to try themselves as actors with the Linguistic Theatre.

PEI has several traditions, e.g. each year in May teachers and students of the faculty celebrate its birthday. Last year many former graduates came to Yekaterinburg to participate in the 60th anniversary of the faculty. Among other traditions "The Days of Physics", ski competitions, chess tournaments, "Fresher's Day" celebration should be mentioned.
