Ways of Expressing the Attribute

An adjective or an adjectival phrase

eg. He stood, unable to move or say a word.

2. a pronoun(possessive,defining, demonstrative, interrogative, relative) or

A pronominal phrase

eg. Can you see those children of mine anywhere?

3. a numeral (cardinal or ordinal) or a numeric phrase

eg. In his second exams he won six distinctions.

4. a noun (in the common or possessive case) or a nominal phrase

eg. He was a village painter. His father's nerves would never stand it.

A prepositional phrase

eg. He was a man of regular habits. The people lived in out of the way places.

An adverb or an adverbial phrase

eg. The room above was large and light. Will it be a step on or a step back?

Participle I or participle II or a participial phrase

eg. The destroyed church is over there.

An infinitive, an infinitive phrase, a for-to infinitive construction

eg.There was some work (for you) to do.

A gerund, a gerundial phrase, a gerundial construction

eg.She hated the idea of living on credit.

Any part of speech used as a quotation

eg.He was being the boss again, using the it's-my-money-now-do-as-you-are-told voice.

A clause

eg. There was nothing else we could do.

The Adverbial Modifier

is a secondary part of the sentence which modifies a verb, an adjective or an adverb. According to the meaning we distinguish the adverbial modifier of

Time

eg. We shall try it tomorrow. While dancing, he kept looking at her.

Frequency

eg. Though they had often bothered him, he had never bothered them.

3. place, direction & distance

eg.Among the hills they sat side by side.He looked everywhere.He lives far from me.

4. manner(with, without, by, with the help of)

eg. He so obviouslyadored his wife.

Attendant circumstances

eg. We walked three miles without meeting anyone.

Subsequent events

eg. He woke up to see that it was daylight.

Degree

eg. It is rather/ very/ entirely/ really good. You are quite a man, my boy.

Measure

eg. We walked five miles. The temperature went down 10 below zero.

9. cause(because of, due to, owing to, thanks to, for the reason of)

eg. I got a decent education thanks to my parents.

10. result(too, enough, so... as + adj + Infinitive)

eg. She is too fond of the child to leave him.

11. purpose(in order, so as, for)

eg. They opened the door for her to come in.

12. condition(if, unless, without, but for, except for)

eg. We'll come earlier if necessary.

13. comparison(as if, as though, like, as, than)

eg. He plays the piano better than Mary.

14. concession(in spite of, despite, though, for all, with all)



eg. Though frightened he carried it off very well.

15. exception(but, but for, except, except for, apart from, aside from)

eg. I looked everywhere except in the bedroom.
