FOCUS ON USING NOTES

NOTES

Write about

• range of activities available

• effect on the environment ...

• … (your own idea)

Eco-tourism has both advantages and disadvantages. Do you agree?

Eco-tourism is often considered an ideal way to come into tact with nature without damaging the environment. Nevertheless, it can also have many drawbacks.

From the tourists' point of view, eco-tourism can offer them a number of options, but can also limit the number of things they can do. On the one hand, alternative activities like hiking, rafting, or visiting a wildlife reserve can be a very enjoyable part of an eco-tourism programme. On the other hand, tourists might miss out on other enjoyable activities, like visiting famous attractions.

As for the environment, it can be both positively and negatively affected. Eco-tourism helps the local economy, and the money can be used to protect wild animals. However, the increased number of tourists can harm nature, as they cause pollution or even spread diseases to the animals.

Finally, local people can benefit greatly from eco-tourism, as they can make more money thanks to increased numbers of visitors. In contrast, an important drawback for the locals could be that tourists could negatively influence the local culture and forever change their traditional way of life.

In conclusion, I think that there are both benefits and drawbacks to eco-tourism. To my mind, eco-tourism will only truly become a responsible form of travel once the problems it creates have been solved.
