 Defining CULTURE AND intercultural encounter

1.^ From the experiments you've learnt that even in your student group you meet different cultures. Let’s think what other intercultural encountersà,where, with whomand in what way/howhappen in your life? Fill in the mind map. Work in pairs.

à Encounter - a chance meeting; a particular kind of meeting or experience with another person

You can read about Mind maps in Appendix 1, p… . When you read try to find out those similarities and differences that mind maps have with cognitive, semantic and vocabulary maps.

2.

An intercultural encounter is an encounter with a person … □ from a different ethnic group in the same country □ from a different religious group in the same country □ from a different region of the same country □ who speaks a different language □ who studies at a different university □ who studies at the same university, but has different major □ who belongs to a different sports team □ who has a different gender
^ Now compare the positions of your Mind map with the ones from the list. Tick the positions that you have mentioned.

Explain to your neighbour WHY each position is or isn't worth being included into your Mind map.

For explanations use the following expressions:

to start with … many people think.... when you consider that... the reason why... that's why... that's the reason why... for this reason... considering...

3.

rapport = a sympathetic relationship or understanding derogative = insulting
8As you see, differences between people make cultural diversity. In today's world this notion is one of the key ones. Watch Video Recording 1 and learn the vocabulary and main ideas of cultural diversity.

Write down 4 tips on successful intercultural

communication mentioned in the video:

1) …………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

2) …………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

3) …………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

4) …………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Can you give your own examples to illustrate these tips?

Explain what cultural diversity means for you. In your explanation try to use each of the following words from the recording as they are important for unerstanding cultural diversity and for establishing intercultural communication. Share your explanations.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OBSERVATION RESPECT
BELIEFS DIFFERENCES VALUES

4.^ Now you are likely to have a more or less clear idea of whatintercultural encounteris and, thus, whatcultureis. Try to verbalize your ideas in definitions of these notions.

If you need tips for definitions making study Appendix 2, p. … .

It is important that you make your own definitions. However you may find it useful to get acquainted with the definitions given by different sources. Find some of them at pp. 19-20.

Intercultural encounter is ……………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Culture is……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

w personal vocabulary Building

People have a variety of contacts throughout their lives. And all of them can be treated as cross-cultural encounters. To differentiate between them, it is possible to single out 4 zones:

interpersonal zone includes contacts with your friends, relatives, acquaintances,

institutional zone is encounters with your group mates, peers, colleagues,

local zone is communication within your community (city, country), and

global zone is contacts outside your usual environment (e.g. holiday abroad).

There are no strict boundaries between these zones, they overlap. However, thinking of their division can be very useful for reflection on your personal intercultural experience. That is what we offer you to do.

First you need to collect ideas and appropriate vocabulary to verbalize these ideas.

1.Study the scheme of 4 zones of intercultural encounters made by Ann Korolyova, a 4th year student of the Belarusian State University and read her comments.
