Southern Federal University provides a wide range of programs at undergraduate, graduate and post graduate levels. It offers a lot of opportunities for intellectual growth and potential development. It trains specialists in more than 50 fields of study such as philosophy, world economy, law, philology, psychology, cybernetics, applied mathematics, physics, astrophysics, optics, geology, ecology, biology, mechanics, information systems and technologies, history, chemistry, engineering, architecture, education and many others. Undergraduate courses allow students to combine subjects of interest and will train the skills necessary for future career. After completing the 4-year- program students are awarded Bachelor's degrees. Students who take a five-year program receive Diplomas of Higher Education and are usually called – Specialists. For those who want to enhance their first degree the University offers graduate programs. They lead to Master’s degree. These courses normally last 2 years and include both coursework and intensive research activities. Graduate students are also asked to complete a project or carry out original research in order to produce a thesis or dissertation.

The university offers full-time and part-time courses. The course of studies at the university is split into 4 years if one takes day classes, and 6 years for evening and distance-learning courses.

The academic year is divided into 2 semesters -autumn and spring . The established curriculum contains specialist's subjects, natural and social sciences, foreign languages and optional (elective) subjects. In the course of their studies, students have to attend lectures, seminars and practical classes, as well as to carry out research. Student progress is measured through the combination of ongoing and end-of-semester assessment. At the end of each semester students take preliminary tests, semester or final exams. The students have to submit their graduation paper at the end of the course of studies.
