Project title: Festival of Light Art ‘Undark’ – New Format
Name of the organization: Non-profit organization ‘Cultural Transit’ Foundation

Summary of the Project (max 300 words)

The festival of light art in the city «Undark»(www.undarkfestival.com) is a private initiative of the nonprofit organization "Cultural transit" Foundation and a group of Ekaterinburg artists, was founded four years ago. Annually in one of the shortest days of the year, the organizers invite citizens to go to the streets and to "get warm" near small light installations, thereby extending the light day, strolling through the city, looking for unusual objects encountered only for four hours. The main purpose of the festival - to give citizens another small celebration during New Year's eve bustle, diversify long Ural winter, to underline natural and technological identity. Designed for the small circle of friends, the festival attracts more and more attention - peak visit organized on the social network "in contact" in December 2014 amounted to more than 12 000 views, number of unique visitors - more than 5 000. The number of spectators attracted to the festival now requires not only the increase in number of submitted works, but also their re-formation - the transition to a more sophisticated technological level, which in turn will make them more spectacular. Meanwhile, until now the festival has been a low budget and has not required large financial and technical costs.

The aim of this year festival is to change ‘Undark’ into a city-wide celebration that meets requirements and formats of modern high-technological light shows.

To achieve the aim the organizers have the following tasks:

  1. Attract a technical partner to the organization of the festival
  2. Get the support of the local municipal authorities
  3. Organize workshops for the artists of Ekaterinburg who are not familiar with modern light art-technologies
  4. Attract a large number of interested professionals to the organization of the festival

Problem description (max 250 words).

The festival "Undark" in previous years revealed a number of serious problems: changed the audience - predominantly students in mixed-age, family, including children. New audience was searching the information on the festival that shows that this event is claimed. But, in this regard, the organizers found out that there were several difficulties.

A. In the first years, when a group of enthusiasts, artists simply offered their friends a winter stroll through the streets, looking for art objects, the instances when these facilities were not working due to weather conditions (temperature these days can drop to -30) were explained and It is not fatal. Last year (2014) the number of visitors was so great, that the technical problems of similar sort began to have a negative impact on the image of the festival and the organizers.

B. The changed festival audience is less sensitive to the experiments in the field of pure art, but demands entertainment, technology and professionalism that is quite difficult to prove experiencing a budget deficit and not having professional artists around the world.

C. Increased number of public require the creation of a professional team, concerned (including financial) to the competent conduct of the festival.
