A Remove the timing inspection plug (A) and the centre plug (B)

Check

6Unscrew the timing inspection plug and the centre plug from the alternator cover on the left-hand side of the engine (see illustration).Discard the plug O-rings as new ones should be used. The engine can be turned using a socket on the alternator rotor bolt and turning it in an anti-clockwise direction (see illustration).Alternatively, place the motorcycle on its centre stand so that the rear wheel is off the ground, select a high gear and rotate the rear wheel by hand in its normal direction of rotation.

7 Turn the engine until the line next to the T mark on the alternator rotor aligns with the notches in the timing inspection hole (see illustration). Note:Turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation (anti-clockwise), viewed from the left-hand end of the engine. Now, check the position of the camshaft sprockets. The 'IN' timing mark on the inlet camshaft


sprocket and the 'EX' timing mark on the exhaust camshaft sprocket should align with the cylinder head surface with each mark on the outside of its respective sprocket (see illustration). If the timing marks are on the inside of their respective sprockets, turn the engine one full turn (360°) anti-clockwise until the T mark on the alternator rotor again aligns with the notches in the timing inspection hole. The marks on the camshaft sprockets should now align correctly with the cylinder head surface.

8 Insert a feeler gauge of the same thickness as the correct valve clearance (see Specifications) between the cam base and follower of each valve of the No. 1 cylinder and check that it is a firm sliding fit - you should feel a slight drag when the you pull the gauge out (see illustration).If not, use the feeler gauges to obtain the exact clearance. Note:The inlet and exhaust valve clearances are different. Record the measured clearance on your chart.

9 Rotate the crankshaft anti-clockwise
