Say what you have learned about Art galleries in our town.

Read the dialogues and learn them. Make up similar dialogues:

- Excuse me, can you tell me where Lenin Street is, please?

- Take the second turning on the left and then ask again.

- Is it far?

- No, it’s only about 5 minutes’ walk.

- Many thanks.

- Excuse me, but I’m trying to find the Church.

- Take the third turning on the right and go straight on.

- Should I take a bus?

- No, you can walk for 5 minutes.

- Thank you very much.

- Does this bus go to the station?

- No, you’ll have to get off at the bank and take the 4 bus.

- Can you tell me where to get off?

- It’s the next stop.

- Excuse me.

- Yes?

- Could you tell me the way to the hospital, please?

- Go along this street and turn right at the traffic lights. The hospital is on the left.

- Thank you.

- That’s O.K.

- Excuse me.

- Yes?

- Could you tell me how to get to the bank, please?

- Yes, of course. Go along this road as far as the traffic lights. Then turn left into the High Street and it’s on the right.

- Is it far?

- No, not very far.

- Thank you very much.

- You’re welcome.

- Excuse me.

- Yes?

- Sorry to trouble you, but could you tell me the way to Mitzkevich Street, please?

- I’m afraid I’ve no idea. I’m a stranger here myself.

- Oh, I see. Well, thank you anyway.

- Sorry, I couldn’t help.

(He walks for a little while. He comes up to a taxi driver.)

- Excuse me.

- Yes? What is it?

- Could you tell me how to get to Mitzkevich Street, please?

- Mitzkevich Street? Let me think now… Yes… Go along this road as far as the super-market. Then turn left and Mitzkevich Street is the first turning on the right.

- I see. Straight on as far as the supermarket… then left… then… right.

- Yes, that’s right.

- It’s not too far from here, is it?

- Oh, no, only a few minutes’ walk.

- Oh, good. Well, thank you very much.

- Not at all.

2. It’s dinnertime. You are hungry. You stop a passer-by and ask him the way to the nearest restaurant.

My Hometown

1.

Woman: So tell me about your hometown, Joyce.

Joyce: Well. It’s a real small town…

Woman: Really? What’s it like there?

Joyce: Oh, I think it’s a very boring place.

Woman: Why?

Joyce: Well, there’s nothing exciting to do. No good restaurants. No nightlife of any

kind. I really get bored there.

Woman: Oh, that’s too bad.

Joyce: Yeah, but lots of people love it there because it’s so pretty.

Woman: Yeah?

Joyce: Oh. It has lovely scenery – lost of mountains, rivers, lakes, trees…

Woman: Well, I don’t know, Joyce, it sounds like a place!

Joyce: Well, if you like hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter.

But, you know, I’m not the outdoor type! I’m a real city person!

2.

Woman: Do you come from a big city, Lou?

Lou: Oh, yes, I do. It’s pretty big.

Woman: What’s it like there?

Lou: Oh, it’s a really great place! It has some fantastic art museums, and wonderful

theatres, and terrific restaurants of all kinds… like Greek, Russian, French,

Thai, Japanese…

Woman: Oh… really? And how are the prices? Are they expensive?

Lou: Yes. I guess so. Food costs a lot… both in the supermarket and in

restaurants. And apartments! They’re so hard to find… and the rents are pretty

high.

Woman: Yes, I guess it’s expensive everywhere these days.

3.

Man: Hey, Nick. Are you going home for the holidays?

Nick: No way!

Man: Oh, why not?

Nick: I don’t like my hometown. Too many people, too many buildings, too many

factories. It’s big and it’s ugly! I like places that are small and quiet. Like here!

Man: Is your hometown as bad as that?

Nick: Yes, it’s pretty bad. It doesn’t even have any good restaurants.

Man: No interesting theatres or nightlife?

Nick: No, not really.

Man: It sounds like a terrible place.

Nick: Yes, it really is.

A. What do they say? Write Yes or No.

B. Talk about your hometown. Ask questions like these and other questions of your own.

What’s your city or hometown? Is it an interesting place? Is it safe? What’s shopping like there? Is it expensive? Is the transport good? Does it have good restaurants? What are the things you like most about your hometown? What are the things you don’t like about it?

C. Have a conversation about your hometown.
