Use Past Continuous where appropriate; if it is not suitable, use Past Simple

 

The students (1.talk) excitedly when the teacher (2.come) in, but they (3.stop) at once when the teacher (4.speak). He (5.walk) across the room and (6.begin) to write questions on the blackboard. While he (7.write), the students (8.sit)down, (9.take) out their pens and (10.prepare) themselves for the test. The teacher(11.finish) writing, (12.sit) down in front of the class and (13.open) a book. He (14.read) his book the whole time while the students (15.answer) the questions. When the bell (16.ring) at four o’clock, most of them (17.still write). The teacher (18.tell) them to stop working and he (19.collect) their answer papers. As they (20.leave) the room he began to correct the papers.

 

Add the prepositions: ‘on’, ‘at’, ‘until’, ‘from’, ‘to’

Add ‘a’ or ‘the’ where necessary

He bought … nice pair of … grey socks, but he couldn’t find any trousers in … colours he likes. He likes dark blue; he doesn’t like bright colours generally. Next he went to … supermarket to buy … piece of … cheese and a bottle of … wine. He loves … wine, but the trouble is that he prefers … white wine while … rest of his family prefers … red wine. … wine he bought last week was very good but very expensive. Add the appropriate form of ‘make’ or ‘do’

Use Present Simple or Continuous, Past Simple or Continuous, or Present Perfect. Sometimes there are two possible answers.

 

Charles and Barbara Williams (1. live) at a village called Harpole. They (2. only live) there for a few weeks. They (3. arrive) on 28th August and they quickly (4. arrange) the furniture in their new house. They (5. not make) many friends yet, but they (6. think) that they soon will. The neighbours (7. be) very kind so far, and Mr. Williams (8. invite) some of them to a party he (9. hold) next week. His friends from London and Oxford (10. come) to the party. The Williams family (11. live) in London before they (12. come) to Harpole. Mr. Williams (13. not like) living in London. While he (14. visit) some friends in Southampton last year, he (15. meet) a company director who (16. offer) him a job. Mrs. Williams (17. want) to stay in London, but when they (18. arrive) in the village, the sun (19. shine) and she already (20. begin) to enjoy the country surroundings.

 

Add ‘few’, ‘a few’, ‘little’, ‘a little’, as appropriate. Sometimes two versions are possible.
