Interview with Kirill

During the interview with Kirill, we decided to check the basic awareness of the subject. At first, he was asked about his and his companies’ relationship with consulting. It needed to be specified what it meant under the term “consulting”, because to Kirill it could mean not only a company that sells expertise and analysis, but a some software or programming as well.

Kirill claimed that depending of the presence of their own expertise their company decides to find solutions on their own or use consulting. Sometimes they research how the competitors deal with specific issues, but rarely.

According to Kirill, it depends on the company, what expertise they have and when to use consulting. If the company is not confident about its’ resources, then they use consulting. Consulting companies are supposed to have more expertise, since they have similar projects and they know the issues in each project that should be paid attention to, how to deal with it and they might have much more experience, even if they are not concentrated in the particular field.

We decided to check the interviewees’ opinion on the small highly specialized issues that they have in the company and how do they solve it, if they turn to consulting companies.

Kirill said that of course they turn to consulting companies, the more specialized the issue is, the more knowledge is needed to solve it, however such knowledge is not always found inside the company. The manager is not always sure that the specialist is experienced enough and has such knowledge and that one can do it well and responsible.

After that we needed to learn Kirills’ opinion on online banking, digital signatures and cloud computing. He told us that indeed they use different kinds of the online platforms for business.

The interviewer decided to introduce the idea that we were researching. Kirill thought that using such idea is possible and it could be interesting. However, he was concerned about the responsibility for the result and the quality. We suggested that such things could be mentioned in master agreements and payment details. Kirill mentions that in this case payment upon result is the solution. He also claims that the point in time when the result is received cannot be the moment when it can be guaranteed and some mistakes are shown afterwards. He remembered that usually when such projects are done with big consulting firms, when something goes wrong afterwards, they guarantee to fix it.

After some consideration Kirill says that it is quite interesting to have highly qualified specialists in a quick access. We support this idea, sometimes it takes more time to make the tender for the consultants, than the length of the project itself. Kirill as well says that it is a problem even if the company has two or three contracts with consulting companies there might be technical delays before the project starts – the agreements are expired or the limits on the contract are overdue.

In the end we decided to ask if Kirill dealt with such companies in Russia. He answered negatively, but commented that it would be interesting.
