Introduction

The proper noun in the English language

Proper nouns in the English language (even they are called proper names) are words that mean the names of people, names of companies, certain organizations, places, cities, countries, calendar holidays, animal nicknames, etc. In addition, in contrast to the Russian language, in the English language proper names are decided to attribute names of the months and days.

Proper names are always written with a capital letter. In the case where the proper name is a combination of several words (the names of some states, organizations, etc.), all these words except articles, conjunctions and prepositions, you must also write with a capital letter.

Names always play a special role. On finding the name begins familiarity with one another. Proper names are essential for communication and understanding people. From common name they are distinguished by a tendency to universal use. Thus, proper names are reference points in the cross-language communication and thus to learn a foreign language and a translation of it. This has created the illusion that the names do not require special attention when learning a foreign language and a translation of it. This approach is based on a falsehood. Proper names do help overcome language barriers, but in its original language environment, they have a complex semantic structure, unique features, and form etymology, numerous connections with other units and categories of language.

Relevance of the topic caused by active interest in problems of translation in general and the problem of the translation of proper names. In recent years, was especially showed interest in the functioning of proper names in literature. Accordingly, the question of the adequacy of PN function in the source texts (ST) and translated texts becomes especially important. Its original language environment, they have a complex semantic structure, unique features, form etymology, capable of modification and derivation, numerous connections with other units and categories of language. During translation of name to another language some part of these properties gets lost. If you do not know or ignore these features, the translation of name into another language can be not only alleviating, but also be the cause of misunderstanding between conversations. Believed that the common names are "translated" by themselves, automatically, especially formal. The result of this formal approach is numerous mistakes, inconsistencies, inaccuracies in the translation of foreign-language texts and the use of names. But sometimes in another side- being built in the absolute "accuracy" of transmission which leads to difficulties of pronunciation or dissonant uselessness of names.
