India and the WestIndia attracted foreigners from early times. In 1498 Vasco de Gama landed on the Malabar coastline. During 100 years the Portuguese, Dutch, English, French and Danish companies all set up coastal trading centres, exporting textiles, sugar, indigo. The East India Company (1599-1857), established by 80 London merchants and charted by Queen Elizabeth I arrived in India in 1608. Within 30 years 27 trading posts had been established, including Fort George, where Madras was developed. The Moghul emperors permitted the company to establish new settlements, which grew in big cities (Calcutta).
In the armed struggle between the French and English trading companies, Britain won and the Peace of Paris 1763 made the British company the main trade partner of India.
In 1765 the Moghul emperor legally recognized the Company’s tax management of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. The Company founded its own army, consisted of local population- sipai ( sepoi)
