MEMO

Date: August 11, 19.

From: Mrs.D.Batchelder, Menswear Merchandiser

To: Ms P.Harbison, Buyer (Men’s shirts and accessories)

Subject: Our meeting on the article in “Menswear Weekly”

To avoid any misunderstanding, I am confirming the points we agreed today, in writing.

1. All press announcements by members of this department should be cleared with me first, and then released through Public Relations.

2. You will write to Caspani immediately, explaining that “Menswear Weekly” misquoted you in their article entitled “Bellhaven Cut Back on Caspani”, in the current issue.

3. You will offer to market test their new shirt coordinates in our new 5th Avenue store in the fall. This may mean you have to reallocate your budget.

ŽŽAfter her meeting with her boss, Polly Harbison writes to Caspani explaining that she was misquoted by "Menswear Weekly", and offers to market test their shirt coordinates. She asks Caspani to supply specifications and price lists. She then plans the market test. She decides to start the test in mid-September, and orders 155 sets, in mixed sizes and colours, at a cost of $28 675. The goods are not delivered until November. They arrive damaged.

Read the following letter of complaint.

Signor Giancarlo Caspani Your ref: 3120 Caspani S. p. a. Our ref: Order 15545 46 via Mauro Macchi 00152 Milan ITALY 3 November 19…   Dear Mr Caspani: Our Order No. 15545 I am writing to complain about the poor condition of the shipment of shirt coordinates we received yesterday against the above order. The boxes, in which the merchandise was packed, were damaged. It appears that they were broken open in transit. From your invoice No. 42199, we estimate that 32 sets have been stolen, to the value of $5920. Many of the remaining garments cannot be sold as new articles. I enclose a list of the damaged and missing articles. We will hold the consignment until we receive your Instruction. May I remind you that in our earlier correspondence, we stressed the importance of receiving delivery in early September, and by 15 September at the latest? If this matter is not resolved and a fresh consignment delivered to us within the next two weeks, we will be obliged to cancel our order and call off the planned market test of your merchandise. Yours truly, Polly Harbison Polly Harbison (Ms) Shirts and Accessories Buyer Menswear Department Encls : 1
