EXERCISE ¹ 323. Report the dialogue. Don’t use the verb say.

A: Oh! It is a quarter to five! I am going to be late. Get me a taxi!

B: I can just as well give you a lift.

A: We won’t catch the 5.30 if you drive.

B: I’ll do my best.

A: Ok, ok.

B: I’ll wait for you outside. Please, be quick. You are always so slow.

A: Me, slow?! Never!

B: We’d better not start arguing.

(half an hour later)

A: Could you go faster, please?

B: There’s a hold up. I can’t help it.

A: Do you think we can get there by half past?

B: Well, it seems we can’t make it. Sorry...

A: Take me back home, please. I am tired. It took me too long to pack. And I really was slow.

B: It’s my fault. I should have hired a taxi for you.

A: Never mind. Let’s order something in and have a good time watching an old movie at home.

 

EXERCISE ¹ 324. Retell these jokes.

A.

Diner: Do you serve crabs here?

Waiter: We serve anyone – sit down.

A French man was sentenced to death for committing a murder. The fatal hour arrived and the prisoner's head was shaved. The priest, the lawyer and the warden came to visit the prisoner in his cell.

“Do you want anything?” the lawyer asked the prisoner. “A glass of wine, perhaps?”

“No, thank you.”

“Would you like a cigarette?”

“No”

“It is customary to grant the prisoner's last wish,” the lawyer explained. “Your last wish will be granted. What is it?”

“I want to study English,” the condemned man said.

-I will examine you for ten dollars.

-Go ahead, Doctor. If you find it, you can have it.

D.

One day the prettiest girl in our room said:

“I have found a new job and I will be leaving tomorrow.”

“Will you be making more money?”

“No,” she said. “Less.”

“Then why are you leaving?” I asked.

“Well,” she said, pointing to the room where she worked, with its exclusively female occupant, “I guess I'm just getting she-sick.”

Two acquaintances, who had not seen Boatswain Macpherson for some years, called at his house on Saturday evening. Mrs. Macpherson answered the door.

“Does Macpherson live here?” they asked.

“Yeah,” was the woman's reply, “just carry him in!”

-I did, sir, admitted Higgins.

-And a louse?

-Yes, sir.

-And did you also say he was a common dirty-tongued little rat?

Higgins thought for a moment and then said regretfully,

-No, sir, I forgot to call him so.

G.

-I'll never forget the night I met my wife at a dance.

-Was it romantic?

-No, embarrassing. I thought that she was home taking care of the kids.
