BASICS OF ACADEMIC WRITING
Academic writing is the style of writing expected at many levels of education – at school, college or university, it is also necessary for passing many kinds of tests. The main units of academic writing are the academic paragraph and the academic.
Paragraph is the basic unit of academic writing. It consists of a topic sentence (introduction), body of the paragraph and concluding sentence (conclusion).
Essay is a short collection of paragraphs that present facts, opinions, and ideas on a topic. The structure of an essay is the same as that of a paragraph – it consists of an introduction, a body and a conclusion. An essay usually has from three to ten paragraphs. Each paragraph discusses one idea, often stated in the topic sentence of a paragraph. Topics of essays may range from your pets and hobbies to arguments about capital punishment or international conflicts.
Paragraphs and essays preserve the structure of English academic writing, which is a very linear – it starts with an idea (the introduction), develops this idea (the body) and reminds the reader what the idea was (the conclusion). Once you are able to write an academic paragraph, expanding it allows you to write an essay.
Paragraphs and essays consist of main points, statements, claims, along with their appropriate support. The support may be examples, evidence, illustrations, statistics, data, etc. The following diagram represents the structure of academic writing:
