It takes about 2 days and 10 hours to get there from Moscow by train and about 4.5 hours by plane. Krasnoyarsk is the center of the vast Krasnoyarsk region, it is the third biggest city in Siberia after Novosibirsk and Omsk and a powerful industrial center. There are about 1,000,000 inhabitants.

2.The city ................... (found) in July of 1628 as a Russian border fort. Andrey Dubenskoy and cossaks arrived at the confluence of the Kacha River with the Yenisei River and constructed a fort to protect the border from attacks of native peoples.

3. An intensive growth of Krasnoyarsk began in 1735with the construction of the Siberian Route (the road M53 nowadays) which connected the towns of Achinsk and Kansk with Krasnoyarsk and with the rest of Russia. Growth continued in 1895 when a railroad ..................(build) here. On January 26, 1822, Krasnoyarsk .......................(give) the status of town and became the capital of the Yenisei Guberniya. After the Russian Revolution of 1917 numerous large plants and factories .......................(construct) in Krasnoyarsk: Sibtyazhmash, the paper factory, the hydroelectric power station (now the fifth largest in the world), and the river port.

4. The total area of the city, including suburbs and the river, is 348 square kilometers. The average air temperature in January is −15.6°C; in July, 18.5°C. The lowest temperature ever recorded was −52.8°C in January 1931; the highest, 36.2°C in July 2002.

5. Krasnoyarsk stands on the both banks of a mighty Yenisey river. The major rivers of the city area are also Mana, Bazaikha and Kacha. Due to the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric dam, the Yenisei never freezes in winter and is never warmer than 14°C in summer. There are several islands in the river, the largest of which are Tatyshev and Otdyha Isles. They .......................(use) mainly for recreation. The Yenisey .........................(cross) by a number of bridges, e.g. Kommunalny bridge, Oktyabrsky bridge.

6.To the south and west, Krasnoyarsk ....................(surround) by forests and mountains: Nikolayevskaya Sopka (notable for its ski jumping tracks), Karaulnaya Gora and Chornaya Sopka. The gigantic rock cliffs of the Stolby Nature Reserve rise from the mountains of the southern bank of Yenisey.

7. There are a number of historical buildings in Krasnoyarsk. On the top of the Karaulnaya hill, the St. Paraskeba Chapel (×àñîâíÿ Ïàðàñêåâû Ïÿòíèöû, 1804, rebuilt in 1854 to 1855) still stands. The chapel, displayed on the 10-ruble note, is one of the iconic images of the city.

Among other notable buildings are the house of the merchant Nikolay Gadalov (beginning of the 20th century), the Roman Catholic Transfiguration Chapel (Ïðåîáðàæåíñêèé ñîáîð, 1911, also known as the Krasnoyarsk Organ Hall), the Regional Studies Museum stylized as an Ancient Egyptian temple, the Krasnoyarsk Cultural/Historical Center and the triumphal arch (2003).

8. There are a number of local holidays celebrated annually in Krasnoyarsk. The most significant holiday is the Day of the City celebrated in June. Other holidays and cultural events are: the Mana Festival, the International Museum Biennale traditionally held in the Krasnoyarsk Cultural/Historical Center, the avant-garde Museum Night festival, the Jazz on Yenisey festival, the Stolbist Day held many times a year, the Bikers' Rally. You can’t find a better place than Krasnoyarsk!
