There are mostly elderly with mental disabilities living in the special education home.
How das the voluntary work look like?
Men and women live in group homes or in shared flats with up to 20 people. Disabled people need depending on their skill and the severity of the disability advice, verbal instructions, help, support, or a complete takeover of activities.
The FSJler support the pedagogical staff in the individual support of people with disabilities mainly in the following tasks:
- Purchase of personal items such as clothing, toiletries, materials for recreation, items for room design
- Grocery shopping and meal preparation.
- Washing, mending, and sort of personal laundry
- Keep clean, clean up and design of the resident's room and the living room group
- Companionship to assistance services, employment opportunities and job offers
- Help in the ingestion of the Meals
- Personal care (bathing washing, brushing teeth, hair care, skin care) and personal hygiene like (visits to the toilet, diaper)
- Taking clothes on and off
- Design of the free time with things to do in and outside of the group home (Creative activities, walks, participation in events, trips, and vacations)
- Structuring and managing the personal everyday of the residents
- Health maintenance (accompanied to the doctor and hospital) Perform simple medical prescriptions in the home care setting (Baths, rubbing, weight control) No procurement of drugs
Basically FSJler not work alone in the group homes. There is always a responsible professional available. After appropriate training time (at least 4 weeks), and after consultation with the Head of Department it is possible to extend the autonomous work under professional guidance. The work is based on the requirements within the institution set-up times. The work week is 38.5 hours. There are shifts of 7.5 hours (beginning of the morning shift 6:30 clock, the end of the late shift 21:30 clock) and working in a 14-day weekend rhythm.
Especially important for candidates it is to endure acoustic unrest well as some residents are often very loud and noisy.
Housing and Meals
You live in a small apartment with probably another person. Everyone has their own room. Kitchen and bathroom are shared.

Seelscheid is ca.30km far from Bonn and Cologne. In the village there are some shops and pubs. Cinemas and adult education can be found in Siegburg. Ca.12km away. During the regular daytime a Bus is going to Siegburg. On evenings and weekends the bus service is limited.

There are 181 mentally handicapped adults living in the LVR HPH Bonn. These people are from the age of 18 years and with varying degrees of disability and multiple disabilities (Body Mind disabilities, mental illness and behavioral disorders).

The home has an interesting history. Most of the residents have lived up to the mid-80s in a mental institution. The move to open plan living area, which is maintained by frequent contact with residents from the surrounding suburbs can be described as a successful attempt by the integration of disabled people.

Description of the placement
The youth hostel in Nettetal is also called circus youth hostel. IN her function as a youth hostel it offers following programs for school classes and youth groups:
· Circus weeks for kids 9 - 13 years
· Programs to experience the nature and outdoor education for kids 9 -13 years
· Workshops for cooperative learning for school classes for kids 10 – 16 years
· Theatre workshops for school classes
· Overnight stay for groups and individuals without program
How das the voluntary work look like?
house working activities
Cleaning of the kitchen and making the dishes
Helping to prepare bread first, lunch and dinner
Learning about hygienic in public kitchen
Taking care of the storing and making the purchase order
Work as a caretaker in the house, in the yard and in the garden
Working activities in the field of the reception and in the administration
To learn and to work with the software of the youth hostel
To answer the thephone
To help with the accomondation of the guest
General support of the guests (like giving them be bedlinen)
Activites in the pedagogical and the circus pedagogical field
Helping with the education of the circus kid to become acrobats, juggler, fakir or clown and to help to organize the circus gala at the end of the program
Helping the the theatre workshops about drugs or about to deal with conflicts
If it the wish of the volunteer he/she can participate as a coworker on a holiday camp. That would mean 24 hours’ work. Precondition is the participation of a coworker trainier and meetings.

The volunteer will live in a furnished room with bathroom and toilet together with up to two other volunteers with the same gender and will get meals from the hostel.

The youth hostel is situated 50 km from the cities Düsseldorf and Duisburg. A bus from the next railwaystation in Kempen is going3 times an hour
In this project it is only possible to do an FSJ – this means applicant must not be older than 25 years and have to accept that no extra funds for language courses are available
