MODULE SUMMARY (INDICATIVE)

PRojects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2™) is a process-based method for effective and efficient project management. “It is a de facto standard used extensively by the UK Government and is also widely recognized and used in the private sector, both in the UK and internationally”. It first started in the UK technology sector in 1979 badged as PROMPT, in 1989 it became known as PRINCE – subsequent reviews lead us to PRINCE2: 2009, Managing Successful Projects. It is owned by the UK Cabinet Office.

The PRINCE2™ method provides a structured project lifecycle with appropriate management “stage gates” to facilitate control, direction and governance. Behind this are the integrated elements involving its 7 Principles, 7 themes and 7 Processes and Tailoring. These Four elements, when incorporated support the Project’s continued business justification (Business Case), ensuring the project has accountable organization (Roles and Responsibilities), learning from experience (Lessons Learned), manage by stages (plans, risk, controls and progress), manage by exception (delegated authorities, change and configuration management, and tolerances), focus on products (the deliverable/s) with the aim of delivering functionality that once accepted into operations will achieve Benefits.

Knowledge of the PRINCE2™ method is tested by examination at Foundation (a three day knowledge based course with a one-hour multiple choice exam- MCQ- done on the third day, results are given immediately) And the Practitioner levels (two additional days testing knowledge and application using a 2.5hr MCQ exam on the last day). Worldwide over 1,000,000 people are certified at Foundation level and Practitioner levels

Aims

For effective project management. PRINCE2™ offers best-practice guidance on project management for projects of any size. It is the world’s most widely accepted project management methodology, used extensively by both public and private sectors. PRINCE2™ is designed to be used on any type of project in any environment. It contains a complete set of concepts and project management processes which are the minimum requirements for a properly run and managed project. The key features of PRINCE2™ are:

• Focus on business justification

• A defined organisation structure for the project management team

• Product-based planning approach

• Emphasis on dividing the project into manageable and controllable stages

• Flexibility to be applied at any level appropriate to a project.

In particular, aims are:

1. To understand, know, apply PRINCE2™ according to the manual and business/project frameworks

2. To pass the 2 exams
