Kazakhstan in first third of ÕVIII century. Tevkelev – 1-st ambassador of the Russian empire

In 1723 Dzhungars tribes have attacked on weakened and isolated Kazakh zhuzs. This year has become in history of Kazakhs as «Aktaban shubyryndy» - «Great disaster», accompanied by brutal destruction and devastation. In these tragical circumstances three Kazakh zhuzs have united under Abulhair khan. The national guard of Kazakhs has been created.

 

In 1726 the khan of Little zhuz Abulhair and foremen have sent ambassador Kojbagar to Russia «to ask protection» for Kazakh Little zhuz. This embassy were unsuccessful. In September of 1730 Abulhair khan has sent again embassy through Ufa to Petersburg with the letter to Russian empress Anna Ioannovna and the oral request for citizenship and protection.

On February, 19th, 1731 empress Anna Ioannovna has signed letters patent to khan Abulhair about joining Little zhuz to Russia. For acceptance of the oath by khan Abulhair and Kazakhs was sent ambassadors led by the translator of the Commission of Foreign Affairs Aleksei Tevkelev.

Activities of the Orenburg Expedition 1734-1737

Chief secretary of the Senate Ivan Kirilov (1695—1737), the Russian scientist-geographer, the cartographer, the economist, the author of the first description of Russia «Blossoming condition of the All-Russia state» (1727), has developed the detailed project òof special expedition «Explanation about the Kirghiz-kajsatskoj and Karakalpak hordes». The author has described the Kazakhstan and Karakalpak earths: an environment, minerals, trading ways, — proving possibilities and benefits of an establishment trading - economic relations of Russia with these people and the countries.

An expedition mounted in 1734 for the purpose of building a system of forts on the border with Bashkiria and Kazakh steppe.

The central point of the project was to base at the mouth of the river Or’ of a new fortified city.

The expedition’s task also involved the organization of trade between Russia and the peoples of Middle Asia, leading ultimately to their unification with the Russian Empire.
