Conclusion

My research was primarily theoretical and that is why it could slightly deviate from a reality. Still, my task was to examine an implementation of different concepts in SWA and their potential in the future. Leadership style of Southwest Airlines can best be described as servant. Former CEO Herbert Kelleher, co-founder of SWA, created an atmosphere of fun and ‘LUV’ within his company and tried to bring this unique atmosphere as a value to customers. Still, the primary focus of SWA’s leadership remains on the followers, i.e. on company’s employees. Relationship between leaders and followers in this organisation is characterized by heart, trust, care, innovativeness, high level of participation and emotional intelligence. Implementation of the servant leadership style and putting emphasis on relationships have made SWA have more than 35 years of profits, therefore making company a success. In a relatively short period of time Southwest Airlines has become a major player in the US airline industry. A servant’s nature of leadership helped company earn trust of its stakeholders and become socially responsible. The case of SWA can help realize the importance of establishing thriving relationships between leaders and followers. However, today’s business environment is highly competitive and often requires unpopular decisions from companies. Moreover, a good atmosphere needs huge efforts to be maintained. So far, SWA managed to preserve its spirit and values even after their leader had changed. We can only hope they will be able to cope with the forthcoming challenges.
