Country Studies. Lesson 6.

The aim of the lesson: to get acquainted with England, it’s geographical position and most famous places of interest. You’ll have an opportunity to share your opinions concerning the topic.

1. a) Pronunciation drill. Pronounce the words, then look at the given map and fill in the table below.

b) Work in pairs. Ask each other general questions about the geographical objects and sights. Use the maps. Model: Is Downing Street situated in Oxford? – No, it isn’t. It's situated in London.

2. Rhythm + pronunciation. Here are some facts about England. They may be false. Reproduce them in a look up and say manner (5 sentences for a person). Correct the wrong statements.

1. The capital of the UK is Edinburg.

2. The flora of England is varied and the fauna is similar to that of the north-west of Europe.

3. There is much rain and fog in England, which English people call smog.

4. The country is very rich in mineral resources.

5. The climate is generally mild and temperate.

6. The country is separated from the continent by The English Channel and the Strait of Dover in the south and the Black Sea in the West.

7. England occupies the territory of 131, 8 thousand square km.

8. The highest part of England is in the west, from where the land gradually slopes down to the east.

9. The white chalk cliffs of the North coast washed by the English Channel can be seen from many miles out at sea.

10. Sea-ports play a great role in the life of the country. London, Liverpool and Glasgow are the biggest English ports.

Horse Guards Parade Tower Bridge (one of the most famous sights in London) .It’s situated not far from the Tower Of London, built in gothic style in the XIX-th century)
