Business Greeting & Introduction Tips

First impressions count in business, whether in person, over the Internet or by snail mail. Leaving a lasting positive impression boosts your chances of getting a new customer. Spend some time coming up with an introduction to use in person and a brief introduction phrase for written communications.

In Person

While social media and networks seem to be taking over, there's still the need for face time. When meeting someone for the first time, say her name once or twice during the introduction to help remember it. Shake hands firmly. Exchange business cards. Take the time to look at the card. Ask the person what she does or something about her company. Afterward, make a note on the back of the business card to follow up. For example, if she was talking about finding a new widget supplier, write that on the card. Follow up the next day with an email and a few recommendations for widget suppliers.

Email

Email can be the bane of a small business person with all the spam and phishing that goes on. Before sending an email, use your word processing program to compose the email and catch any misspellings or grammatical mistakes. Since you wouldn't send a letter without a salutation and closing, have the courtesy to include the recipient's name on the first line of the email. Emailing for business is not a casual affair, although it is a bit more informal than a business letter. Introduce yourself to the recipient and remind him how you met. If you haven't met him in person, give a reason why you're contacting him.
