1 The SIMPLE PLUPERFECT may be encountered in writing but is seldom used in speech, when the compound pluperfect(tinha falado) is preferred. In regular verbs you addrato the stem of the infinitive: e.g.falara, comera, partira.In irregular verbs the termination you add to the stem of the past definite is the same as for the imperfect and future of the subjunctive mood: e.g.dissera, fizera, fora, dera, trouxera, vira, tivera.

2 The subjunctive mood also has its own compound tenses:

the perfect,tenha falado, the pluperfect,tivesse falado, and the compound future,tiver falado.

3 Haver is an auxiliary verb which sometimes replaces the verbter in compound tenses, especially in literary works. It is then fully conjugated as shown above. Haver as an impersonal verb only uses the 3rd person singular in all tenses, i.e.ha, which means 'there is'/'there are' etc.

Some verbs which require a preposition before the infinitive of another verb

acabar de to finish (doing something) Acabo de comer, i.e. 'I have just (finished) eaten'.

aconselhar a to advise Aconselho-o a ver o médico.

ajudar a to help Ela ajuda-me a lavar a louça.

acabar por to end up (doing...) Ele acabou por consentir.

começar a to begin Ele começou a falar.

começar por to begin by... Ele começou por dizer.

esquecer-se de to forget Esqueci-me de te dizer que...

lembrar-se de to remember Não me lembro do seu nome.

gostar de to like Gosto de comer. (preposition also needed before a noun)

obrigar a to force, compel Obriguei-a a dizer a verdade.

precisar de to need Preciso de falar com ele. (also needed before a noun)

voltar a (to do it) again Voltei a vê-lo.

voltar para to return to (do something) Voltei para te ver.

pensar em to think of Pensei em falar contigo.

pedir para to ask (to) Pedi-lhe para fazer isso.
