WHY DO I LEARN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE?

Though there are almost three thousand languages in the world, English is the most universal. It is the official language in over forty countries. It is the most used language in international business, science and medicine.

Even in the countries where English is not the first language, a number of English words are used. Words from no other language are borrowed more often then from English. Hundreds of words borrowed from English can now be found in other languages such as business, golf, hotel, airport, jeans, O.K. etc.

English is everywhere. It is on signs, clothing, posters, soft drinks and other goods around the world.

The English language, in the course of its historical development, has met with so many influences, that its very structure, both lexical and grammatical, has come to reflect in many ways its international use. What we call English words are very largely, by more than two-thirds, French, Latin, Greek and other words in origin. One of the key features of English as an international language is its power to take up elements from other languages. The inflectional system of modern English is extremely simple. There are no more than a handful of grammatical endings. The structure of English sentences, in contrast to the relative simplicity of the word forms, is very complex. Thus English, by virtue of its vast stock of words and its highly productive grammatical structure, is indeed able to cope with the most diverse tasks of international communication.

English is the world language because it is the language of progressive science and technology, trade and cultural relations, commerce and business.

I learn English because I understand that I can use it. English promotes your efficiency and broadens the professional horizon. Knowing English I can read foreign literature in the original. Many scientific and technical journals are written in English although they are not necessarily published in England or other English-speaking countries. If you want to work for a degree you should read the works of prominent scientists in the original. It enables us to link up with the world experience and to be aware of the latest achievements and discoveries.

Knowledge of English makes easy operating a PC because most programs are made in it. It is also of great use for working in the Internet and correspondence by means of e-mail.

At numerous international meetings and conferences English is the main language. The Olympic Games and other multinational sports events cannot do without it.

Learning English broadens your intellectual horizon as well. You can read foreign newspapers and magazines and be well informed not only about scientific events, but about political and cultural events as well. English gives the access to films and books in the original.

English is also important for tourist purposes. When travelling abroad you will have less communication problems if you know English. You will feel at ease and understand everything a guide says about cultural heritage of various peoples.

We need English in our day-to-day life as well. For example, to read a manual for some household appliance, if it is written in English. And, of course, there are a lot of pop-songs in English. It’s really great to know what they are about and to be able to sing them!
