The Republic of Belarus

The Republic of Belarus

I’d like to tell you about my native country. My motherland is Belarus. The full name of the country is the Republic of Belarus. My country is not big, but it is very beautiful. The area of Belarus is 207600 sq km. The population is about 10 million people. Belarus is situated in the centre of Europe. It borders on 5 countries: Russia, the Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. The republic of Belarus is made up of six regions: Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno, Minsk and Mogilev. The capital and the biggest city of the country is Minsk.

Belarus is mostly flat. Some uplands can be found near Minsk and in some districts of Mogilev and Grodno regions. Belarus is not washed by any seas or oceans, but Mother Nature gave this country a lot of beautiful blue lakes and rivers, thick forests and rare species of animals and plants. There are 111 species of trees and about 12,000 species of plants and mushrooms in Belarus. More than 30,000 species of animals live in the wilds of our country: elks, wild boars, deer, wolves, hares and beavers. Belarusian lakes are rich in fish, especially Lake Naroch, where you can find eel, trout and pike. There are practically no dangerous snakes in Belarus. Have you ever been to our national parks? In Pripyatsky National Park you can see 200 moss species! Some oaks in Belavezhskaya Pushcha are from 300 to 700 years old.

And, of course, our republic has its own national symbols. There is a green stripe on our flag. It is a symbol of our green forests. Belarus is famous for its white storks. People say, they are a symbol of good luck. The white colour is the symbol of peace. The blouses and the shirts in the Belarusian national costume are white with beautiful red ornaments - crosses and stripes. The symbol of Belovezhskaya Pushcha is the bison, a very strong animal. And the symbol of Belarusian fields is the cornflower - a small blue flower. People sometimes call Belarus the blue-eyed country. I’m very proud of my country!
