Task 7. Read about illustrators and art directors and say why they have different perspectives.

Illustrators frequently are freelance artists who work on projects as agencies need them. They have invested a lot of time, energy, and skill perfecting their craft and want to be taken seriously. And they bring to the table a conflict most creative people carry around them: they consider themselves artists first and advertising people second.

Art directors work for clients who are seeking the best solutions to their marketing communications problems. They are members of a team and consider themselves advertising people first.

Task 8. Read the following dialogs and say what illustrators think of art directors and how the perspectives of art directors differ from those of illustrators. These conversations were exaggerated to be funny and make a point, but they do speak some truth.

Dialog 1: two illustrators talking.

Illustrator #1: ‘If it weren’t for all those idiot art directors, I’d be a big star by now’.

Illustrator #2: ‘They just stifle me from doing great work. They’re always compromising my vision’.

Dialog 2: two art directors talking.

AD # 1:‘I can’t believe the gall of that guy. One lousy sketch is all I got and he says, ‘take it or leave it’’.

AD # 1:‘Sounds like the arrogant jerk that I had to deal recently. He wanted to know why I called him if I wouldn’t let him do his vision’.
