LISTEN AND PRACTISE

Mr. Samarin is in his room at the hotel. He is making a phone call to his friend Michael he met in London last year. Listen to the conversation. Number the questions in the order you hear them. Act as Mr. Samarin and answer the questions.

2. Act out the conversation:

Operator: R & D Department. Good afternoon. Can I help you?

Mr. Samarin: Hello. I’d like to speak to Mr. Brown.

Operator: Who’s calling, please?

Mr. S. Mr. Samarin.

Operator: Will you hold the line, please?

Mr. S.: Yes, thank you.

Mr. Brown: Brown speaking.

Mr. S.: Hello, Michael! This is Alex Samarin from Volgograd.

Mr. B.: Hello, Alex! What a surprise! I didn’t expect to hear you. How are you doing? Where are you calling from?

Mr. S.: I’m all right, thanks. I’m calling from the Claremont Hotel. I am in London on a short visit for a conference and I’d like very much to meet you. Could you join me for dinner tonight?

Mr. B.: Sure. I’ll be free by 6 o’clock. Let’s meet at the restaurant the ‘Pheasant’. Do you remember that place?

Mr. S. Well, I’m not sure. Can you remind me where it is?

Mr. B. It’ll take about 15 minutes on foot. Go to the right as you leave your hotel and turn left when you get to the big square. Cross the square, go straight on as far as a mini-golf center and the restaurant is opposite it. Got it?

Mr. S.: Yes, sure. I’ll be right there. See you.

Mr. B.: Right. Bye.
