There are fifty states in the United States of America. Two of the states, Alaska and Hawaii, are not connected to the other states. The USA is washed by the Pacific Ocean in the west, by the Atlantic Ocean in the east, by the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico in the south. In the north you can see Great Lakes.

The USA is a large country with many national wonders. It has many kinds of land - rocky coasts, dry deserts, big rivers, grasslands, lakes, high mountains, great forests and sandy beaches where you can enjoy the beauty and the power of wild America. The Grand Canyon, Yosemite Valley and Yellowstone are among them. Many rivers cross the United States. But the greatest is the Mississippi. Native Americans called it "the father of waters". Among other big rivers are the Colorado and the Missouri. The Colorado River rises in the Rocky Mountains that stretch from Alaska down to the south of the country. Another big chain is the Appalachians in the east also running from north to south.

The Grand Canyon is one of America's main tourist attractions. The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions years ago. Today, the canyon is one mile deep and 200 miles (320 km) long. It's interesting that there are different types of plants and animals on opposite side of the canyon. The south side is dry and desert country. The north side has tall forests.

Yellowstone National Park covers tree states: Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. The park is situated on top of a huge volcano. This is why Yellowstone has got many thermal pools, geysers and hot springs. The Old Faithful is the most famous geyser that erupts every 90 minutes. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is full of amazing hiking trails and spectacular views. There are a lot of wolves, elk, bison and even grizzly bears.

The capital of America is Washington DC. More than 250 million people live in the USA. Americans built the first skyscraper , they put the first man on the Moon. They like exciting, modern cities, new houses, and new cars. The people of the USA are a mixture of many different nationalities. It is a big 'melting pot' of countries. In the past, people from many different European countries came to the USA and made one country out of many. The different people brought to their new land a wonderful mixture of customs and traditions. The Germans brought Christmas trees, the Irish brought St. Patrick's Day, the Scots brought Halloween.
