SIMULATOR TRAINING OF AVIATION SPECIALISTS

Simulator training is a compulsory part in the teaching process while preparing aviation specialists. The main goals and tasks of the simulator training are - to develop students’ habits and skills to work and to control air traffic in real situation. Simulator centre is a special teaching training complex. There are highly qualified and experienced instructors and operators there. The instructors help the future controllers in controlling air traffic. Because the theoretical programme that the students get in the class is not enough, it is necessary to have a regular training practice. The instructors create not only the standard situations in the air and on board the aircraft, but non-standard ones. The students develop their professional habits and skills while controlling air traffic under emergency conditions. It is easier to do it at the simulator than in reality. With the help of special devices you can create any different conditions rain, icing, fog, emergency situations such as: engine failure, fire, aircraft pressurization, and so on. A controller has to be ready to understand the situation quickly and to give the necessary instructions to a pilot what to do. Students ‘talk’ to the pilots of aircraft through the communications system giving them the commands and instructions.

The students use English phraseology while communicating with the aircraft. The number of foreign aircraft operating international service is constantly increasing. English phraseology is an integral part of a controller’s job. The requirements concerning English are constantly increasing from year to year. A great number of academic hours are devoted to the simulator training according to curriculum at the educational establishments. Simulator training practice is necessary and compulsory for all ATC specialists. It helps the students not to be confused in any critical and difficult situations but to find correct and right decisions in this or that situation. A controller is responsible for the safety of flights. It means that we entrust him with our lives.

With air traffic growing at an unprecedented rate throughout the world, and a dramatic shortage of qualified air traffic controllers, quality ATC training is imperative. Simulation has to go beyond a simple computer game consisting of a few conflicting aircraft. Complete simulation needs to include all of the factors, which are present in actual ATC facilities. It is now essential to teach potential controllers how to manage airspace, communicate which other aircraft and agencies, use his flight strips and work within a team.

CAREERS IN AVIATION

 

There are very many different professions in the world. And all of them are very interesting and important. Aviation jobs are very necessary and important. They are: pilots, co-pilots, flight-engineers, flight-attendants, air traffic controllers, airport directors and many other professions.

Pilots and co-pilots are skilled and highly trained professionals who have been carefully selected for their ability to fly safely. They transport passengers and cargo. The pilot is in charge of the aeroplane and supervises all other crew members. The co-pilot assists the captain in air-to-ground communications, monitoring flight and engine equipment, and in operating the aeroplane’s controls.

Flight engineers are members of flight crews who make sure the mechanical and electrical devices aboard aeroplanes work properly. They assist the pilot and co-pilot in making pre-flight checks of instruments and equipment. Flight engineers watch instruments in the air and operate controls to regulate the performance of the engines, air conditioning and other equipment. They also keep records of engine performance and fuel consumption.

Flight attendants (also called stewardesses and stewards) are always on board the planes. They help to make the passengers’ flights safe, comfortable and enjoyable. They are responsible to the captain like other members of the crew. As passengers come abroad, they greet them, check their tickets and assist them with their coats and small luggage. Flight attendants use the public address system to instruct passengers in the use of emergency equipment. They are ready to answer any passengers questions and serve cocktails and pre-cooked meals.

Air traffic controllers are the guardians of the airways. They coordinate flights to prevent accidents and minimise delays in take-offs and landings. Some regulate airport traffic, other regulate flights between airports. ATC controllers give the pilots the instructions to taxi, take off, climb, descend, land and so on. Route controllers communicate with pilots by radio and use radar and other electronic equipment to help keep aerodromes on course. They also warn pilots about nearly aircraft and other possible hazards.

Airports are usually operated by a director or manager responsible either to the owners of the airport or to the local government authorities.

He has been described as a ‘mixture of aviation expert, real estate operator, construction engineer, electronic wizard, management genius and politician’. He is involved in such activities as the following: making and enforcing airport rules and regulations; planning and supervising maintenance programmes; negotiating leases with airport tenants, such as aircraft repair stations, terminal concessionaires and airlines; surveying future needs of the airport and making recommendations; keeping records and making required reports; setting up the airport budget; training and supervising the employees.

AIR TRAFFIC SERVICE FACULTY OF THE ACADEMY

Air Traffic Service Faculty is in the Air Navigation Institute (AIN). The Institute has old traditions and experience in Air Traffic Service personnel training and provides for the training of air traffic service engineers:

- specialization – air traffic control;

- specialization – flight service and planning.

Air Navigation Institute conducts refresher and upgrading courses for ATS personnel according to the ICAO standards (both in Russian and English).

Students from many countries are being trained at our Faculty. We study many subjects which are essential for our future activity. They are: mathematics, aviation meteorology, English, Air Traffic Control technology, air navigation and many others. There are a lot of equipped classrooms and laboratories where we have our lectures and practical lessons. Many computer classes are at our disposal. We have our practical training at the simulator centre. All our teachers are very skilful and highly experienced. Our instructors at the simulator centre give us a lot of knowledge. Training is a key element in the advancement of human resources. We know that aviation safety and efficiency depend on strict and rigorous professional training.

Every year the students of our faculty take part in the scientific research activities conducted at the Academy. They concern the questions of flight safety, perfection of accident investigation means and methods, development of computer based training technologies, including artificial intellect problems.

Some talented students after graduating from the Academy continue their education in the post-graduate study department of the Academy.

Our student’s life is very interesting. We often organize different parties and discotheques. Good music and good friends help us to relax and to forget about problems.

A complex of sports facilities, a stadium, sports grounds are at cadets’ disposal. There are many different sport groups at the Academy. Our football team is famous and very popular among other students and higher educational establishments. Our football players have won a lot of prizes in different competitions.

There are many girls at our faculty. They want to be the controllers. More and more women will work in aviation.

I will remember all my friends, teachers, instructors for ever, because the years at the Academy are the happiest in my life.
