Famous People of Chuvashia

 

N.Ya.Bichurin was bom in 1777 into the family of Chuvash priest. He got higher theological education. During 14 years he has been the head of the Russian orthodox mission m Peking. His superb knowledge of the Chinese language allowed him to study professionally the history of the peoples of Central and Middle Asia, Southern Siberia and the Far East, their languages, written language, economy and culture. In 1828, the Russian Academy of Sciences elected him as its corresponding member his works were awarded four times with the Demidov prize. Bichurin was friendly with poets Pushkin and Krylov, painter Bryullov writer Odoyevskii.

The sons of the Chuvash land have left a noticeabie trace in art and science P. E. Egorov (1731-1789) played a visible role in the formation of architectural style of Russian classicism N.S.Artsybashev (1773-1841), poet and historian, did research in history of the Russian state. V.R.Zelensky (1875-1923), great botanist and physiolo­gist of plants, was born in Cheboxary. I.E.Tsvetkov (1845-1917), patron of the arts and collector of famous paintings, was bom in the Alatyr district, S.D.Erzya (1876- 1959), sculptor, worked here, too. Great artists M.D.Mikhailov (1893-1971) and Y.D.Mordvinov (1901-1966), A.A.Kokel (1880-1956). painter, began their activity in Chuvashia.

 

I.Ya.Yakovlev, enlightener, played an enormous role in the formation of Chuvash culture. Being a high school student, Y.Ya.Yakovlev (1848-1930) organized a private school for training of teachers. During his studies at the University he created the Chuvash alphabet used nowadays and first primers. His students, who finished the Simbirsk teacher school became the first Chuvash writers, composers, painters. I.Ya. Yakovlev devoted about 50 years of life to translation of the books of the Old and New Testaments.

k.Ivanov is one of the outstanding students of I.Ya. Yakovlev. From his early age K.Ivanov proved to be a palmer and a graphic artist, a folklore collector and a trans­lator of cannonical Christian texts and the Russian classics. His first mature work - the poem "Narspi" published in 1908 with the assistance of l.Ya.Yakovlev, became a pe­culiar compection of the entire prewritten period of the development of Chuvash word.

N.I.Ashmarin (1870-1933) is the author of the 17-volume dictionary of the Chuvash language. This work is a book of ready reference for all those who studies the lan­guage, way of life, world outlook of the Chuvash people. N.I.Ashmarin has pro­foundly substantiated the Bulgarian theory of origin of the Chuvash people and is fa­mous for his works in the field of general turkology. He is one of the scientists cited mostly.
