DUCK

 

1. biggest duck in the pond - most important person in a small group
2. if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, it must be a duck - Assume the obvious.
3. duck out - leave, run away, desert
4. dead duck - someone or something that is certain to fail
5. lame duck - an elected officeholder whose term of office has not yet expired but who has failed to be re-elected and therefore cannot gather much political support for initiatives

CHICKEN

GOOSE

 

1. what’s good for the goose is good for the gander - What is good for one person is good for another; often what is good for the man is good for the woman. Also "what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander".

2. goose flesh - the bumpy condition of the skin induced by cold, fear, etc., caused by contraction of the muscles at the base of the hair follicles with consequent erection of papillae: so called because of the resemblance to the skin of a freshly-plucked fowl. Also called: goose bumps, goose pimples, goose skin
3. goose step - a military march step in which the leg is swung rigidly to an exaggerated height. esp as in the German army in the Third Reich
4. cook someone's goose - Informal. a. to spoil someone's plans. b. to bring about someone's ruin, downfall, etc.
5. kill the goose that lays the golden eggs - to sacrifice future benefits for the sake of momentary present needs.
6. cannot say boo to a goose - shy

 

HAWK

 

1. hawk - to offer (goods) for sale, as in the street.
2. watch me like a hawk - watch me carefully
3.hawk - a person who advocates or supports war or warlike policies
4. hawk-eyed - having extremely keen sight

HEN

 

1. as scarce as hen's teeth - Non-existent.
2. Hen - dialect. a term of address (often affectionate), used to women and girls
3. hen party - party for only women before a wedding



VARIOUS

dead as a dodo - Dead; obsolete; completely washed up.

eagle eyes - a person who can see details or errors

as the crow flies - From point A to point B directly.

as sick as a parrot - very, very sick; on your deathbed, sicker than a dog

cock-and-bull story - untrue story

proud as a peacock - Proud.

to rule the roost - To control the home.

wise as an owl – wise

pigeon-toed - having the toes turned inwards

 

FISH

 

1. There's something fishy about this - you feel that someone is not telling the truth or behaving completely honestly.

2. A big fish in a small pond - most important person in a small group

3. sleeping with the fishes - Watery death
4. a kettle of fish - A terrible mess.

5. a different kettle of fish - different, not the same
6. like a fish out of water - Out of one's element.
7. have better (or other) fish to fry - More important things to worry about.

8.there's more than one fish in the sea - There are always more options -- usually referring to the dating "pool".

9.Like shooting fish in a barrel –something is very easy, an easy target

MOLLUSCS

 

1. as happy as a clam - "Happy as a Clam" is not the original quote. It has been shortened. Why is a Clam particularly happy? The original quote was "Happy as a Clam in High Tide". Which of course is when the clam is the safest.
2. clam up - Informal. to keep or become silent or withhold information

3. the world is his oyster - He can do anything.
4.a snail's pace - Slow.

 

SNAKE

1. snake in the grass - There is trouble.
6. slippery as a snake - Tricky – unable to trust.

7. mean as a rattler - mean

TOAD

1. ugly as a toad - Ugly.
