29.18 Inspect the front cover oilseal (arrowed) chipped, or otherwise damaged, they may be re-used. 12Inspect the commutator bars on the armature for scoring, scratches and discoloration. The commutator can be cleaned and polished with crocus cloth, but do not use sandpaper or emery paper. After cleaning, wipe away any residue with a cloth soaked in electrical system cleaner or denatured alcohol. 13Using an ohmmeter or a continuity test light, checkfor continuity between the commutator bars (see illustration).Continuity (zero resistance) should exist between each bar and all of the others. 14Also, check for continuity between the commutator bars and the armature shaft (see illustration). There should be no continuity (infinite resistance) between the commutator and the shaft. If the checks indicate otherwise, the armature is defective. 15 Check for continuity between each brush and the brush terminal. There should be continuity (zero resistance). Check for continuity between the terminal bolt and the housing (when assembled). There should be no continuity (infinite resistance). 16 Check the front end of the armature shaft for worn, cracked, chipped and broken teeth. If the shaft is damaged or worn, renew the armature. 17 Inspect the end covers for signs of cracks or wear. Inspect the magnets in the main housing and the housing itself for cracks. 18Inspect the insulating washers and front cover oil seal for signs of damage and renew them if necessary (see illustration). Reassembly
19Slide the brushes back into position in their holders and place the brush spring ends onto the brushes. 20 Ensure that the square insulating washer is in place on the terminal (see illustration 29.9b).then insert the terminal through the rear cover from the inside. Fit the O-ring, insulating washers and standard washer on the terminal and then fit and tighten the nut (see illustrations 29.8b and a). 21 Fitthe brushplate assembly into the cover, making sure its tab is correctly located in the slot in the cover (see illustration). 9»20 Electrical system Date: 2016-01-14; view: 703
