(o„ REAR A Sump bolts (arrowed) - note cast arrows for tightening procedure 18 Oil sump, oil strainer and pressure relief valve - removal, ^ Note:This procedure can be carried out with the engine in the frame. Removal 1 Drain the engine oil (see Chapter 1). 2 Unscrew the sump bolts, slackening them evenly in a criss-cross sequence to prevent distortion, and remove the sump (seeillustrations). Discard the gasket as a new one must be used. 3 Pull the oil strainer out of its socket in the crankcase, noting the position of the locating tab in the crankcase casting (see illustration).Remove the packing collar and discard it as a new one must be used. 4 Pull the oil pipe out of its sockets in the crankcase, noting which way round it fits - the short end faces towards the front of the engine, the long end towards the rear (see B Remove the sump and discard the gasket illustration).Discard the O-rings as new ones must be used. 5 Pull the pressure relief valve out ofits Inspection 6Remove all traces of gasket from the sump and crankcase mating surfaces. Clean the inside of the sump with solvent and inspect the sockets and sealing surfaces for the strainer, oil pipe and pressure relief valve in the underside of the crankcase. 7 Clean the oil strainer in solvent and remove any debris caught in the mesh. Inspect the strainer for any signs of damage and renew it if necessary. 8 Clean the oil pipe in solvent. Inspect the pipe for any signs of damage and renew it if necessary.
