Moscow – a leading center of science

1. Recognised throughout the world as a city of advanced science and engineering, and a genuine bulwark of peace and friendship among nations, Moscow is more and more frequently chosen as the place for major international conferences and meetings, and this is natural. Outstanding success achieved by Russian scientists in many spheres has had a great impact on world civilization. Russian scientists were the first to effect a break-through to outer space, the first to build an atomic power station, to manufacture synthetic diamonds, to put quantum generators to man’s service. In other branches of science, too, they blazed new trails. Moscow higher educational and research institutions and laboratories are well to the fore in science and engineering. Many new trends in modern science which have had a very great influence on human progress originated here.

2. The fact that so many scientific congresses, conferences and symposia are held in Moscow is a sign of world recognition of the role of Russian science. Every year at least ten international scientific conferences take place in Moscow. The foreign scientists show great interest in the well-equipped laboratories at Moscow University, and at the branch Institutes of the Academy of Science, and express real pleasure at meeting our scientists.

3. Moscow itself is the city of the future. Its wide avenues and boulevards, with graceful trees at the side and in the middle, and its numerous beautiful parks and gardens break the monotony of cement. No visitor to Moscow can miss the new buildings. The giant cranes all over the city are an ever-present reminder of the colossal scale of construction. Moscow is one of the biggest industrial centres in the Russian Federation, but it is an exceptionally clean and neat city. There is no underground railway in the world, which could match the Moscow Metro.
