These lands were completely inhabited only 10-8.000 years ago. At the end of the 3d – the beginning of the 2d millennium BC the Indo-European tribes, ancestors of the Slavs and the Balts, came to Belarus.

In the VI-VIII centuries the Belarussian ethos began to form. This led to the appearance of Eastern Slavic ethnic groups of Krivichi, Dregovichi, Radimichi who were a part of ancient Russian nationality and later in the 9th century formed the state Kievskaja Rus. In the 13th century the Belarussian and the Lithuanian ethnic territories became the center of formation of one of the biggest feudal monarchies in Europe – the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the middle of 16th century the Grand Duchy and the Kingdom of Poland united to form a new state – the Rech Pospolitaja (Commonwealth), part of which (including the territory of Belarus) was annexed to the Russian Empire. After the victory of the uprising in October, 1917 in Petrograd, on the 8th of November the Soviet power came to Minsk. The Belarussian Soviet Socialistic Republic was proclaimed on the 1st of January, 1919 and in December of 1922 it became a part of the USSR. The Western Belarus which went to Poland in 1921 returned to the BSSR in 1939.
