Exercise 28. State the function of the participle in the sentences. Translate them into Ukrainian.

1. I looked at the smiling child. 2. Being asked for her opinion, she blushed. 3. Having voiced his objection he sat down. 4. Smiling she showed me the letter. 5. The theatre being built here will be one of the largest in this town. 6. Having been told to wait she waited. 7. She was wearing a knitted hat pulled low over her eyes. 8. She was always well dressed. 9. A good child was not supposed to speak unless spoken to. 10. When told to go in he seemed to change his mind and still clutching the brief-case left the room. 11. She continued staring at the screen as if fascinated by her first sight of television. 12. The dress was not hopelessly damaged though badly stained in one or two places. 13. Deeply hurt Mrs.Smith cleared the table. 14. Having written the last word she looked up interrogatively. 15. Holding the child close to her she seemed to be showing him something.

Exercise 29. Put the verbs in brackets into a correct form (infinitive, gerund, or participle).

1. This book tells you how (win) at games without actually (cheat). 2. When the painter felt the ladder (begin) (slip) he grabbed the gutter (save) himself from (fall). 3. Did you advise him (go) to the police? – No, I don’t like (give) any advice on such a difficult matter. 4. We watched the men (saw) the tree and as we were walking away heard it (fall) with a tremendous crash. 5. There was no way of (get) out of the building except by (climb) down a rope and Ann was too terrified (do) this. 6. It is very unpleasant (wake) up and (hear) the rain (beat) on the windows. 7. Why did you go all around the field instead of (walk) across it? – I didn’t like (cross) it because of the bull. I never see a bull without (think) that he wants (chase) me. 8. I knew I wasn’t the first (arrive), for there was a smoke (rise) from the chimney. 9. I don’t like (get) bills but when I do get them I prefer (pay) them promptly. 10. I’m not used to (drive) on the left. – You’ll find it quite easy (do).
