Everybody knows that; Evidence exists that; It is generally recognized that;
FOR THE BENEFIT OF MANKIND
There is nothing more practical than a sound theory. This maxim became obvious a long time ago so it is small wonder that academic science, traditionally aimed at dealing with the primary tasks of the economy, public health and culture, devoted great attention to the fundamental sciences. Given the technological advance of today, research should have immediate impact on the development of engineering processes and the improvement of people's standards of living.
The primary tasks researchers have in this respect are improving procedures for introducing into production new R&D projects, developing highly efficient processes to relieve the country of costly imports of materials and equipment, as well as to guarantee international energy safety.
Today, one can see significant achievements along these lines.
Work continues on various purpose-oriented programs which involve numerous research organizations of the word.
Major results have been obtained in physics, biochemistry, genetics, information technologies, and many other areas of research. Scientists are working successfully on problems related to computer software and perfecting the process of automation and control. Of great importance is the advance of chemical sciences as well as geochemistry, geology, and geophysics. Achievements in space exploration are also worth mentioning.
It is like an international team working together in coordination — each science, each technology makes its valuable contribution to scientific knowledge, economic potential, and well-being of people. It enables man to set ever more daring goals on his way to unraveling Nature’s mysteries.
Questions:
1) You will agree, perhaps, that not every theory has a direct practical outcome. How, then, would you interpret the opening sentence? And in connection with this statement, could you account for the great attention devoted to fundamental research?
2) How, to your mind, is scientific-engineering progress linked with people's well-being? What achievements of researchers in different countries (in Ukraine) could prove your opinion? Speaking about your institute, could you mention some projects which contributed to people's well-being?
3) Read the closing sentence of the text. Could you show, taking your institute as an example, how numerous institutions of the world cooperate both within each particular country and beyond to provide the answers man needs to solve his problems.
READING ADS
Leading institutions (research centres, laboratories, institutes, universities, etc,) invite scientists, students, researchers, educators and other highly motivated people with their knowledge and expertise to help promote world science. You will find out about positions and vacancies reading advertisements which they put in their periodicals. Student opportunities to expand knowledge and acquire new skills are also described there.
An ad, as a piece of text, has the following structure and contents parts.
INSTITUTION THAT SEEKS A CANDIDATE
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
