Ask a British teenager about his schooling.

1) Are you a good pupil? 2) What is your favourite subject? 3) Do you get much home task?

4) Is your school life interesting? 5) What foreign language do you learn?

4 You are talking with a British student. What would be your recommendations for the day of an exam?

Well, the key to success is to be well-prepared for the exam. But there are some more simple things you should not forget about. First of all, you should get enough sleep the night before. That way you will look and feel your best. Secondly, I advise you to wear the right clothes and arrive ten minutes early. If you really feel nervous, breathe deeply for a minute or drink some water. And finally, think positively, concentrate and do your job. (Good luck!)

5. Does your school have any traditions?

It is very important to have some school traditions, because it unites pupils and gives a sense of belonging and pleasant memories. Our lyceum has a busy and eventful life.

We arrange parties and concerts, centered round holidays. Pupils especially like annual ”Lyceum Star” contest, where everybody can parade his talent.

In February we celebrate the “School Reunion Day”. Ex-pupils and former teachers of different years come to the lyceum, remember their school years and share their life experience with us.

On Valentine’s Day a special “love post” works, and by the end of the day Cupids deliver love letters to pupils and teachers.

There are different events connected with volunteering to help disabled children.

I will never forget a “Self-government Day”, when pupils performed the functions of school administration and teachers. It was very useful and a great fun.

And, finally, I can't wait for the “Graduation Ceremony”, when 11- formers say good-bye to the lyceum family, thank their teachers and parents. They say it is a glamorous event, full of style, warmth and gratitude.

5, 6, 7 – Education, School, School traditions

1. Let’s talk about education. What can you tell us about the system of school education in Belarus?

School education is divided into three levels: primary (4 years), basic (9 years) and secondary (11 years). A child starts his schooling at 6 or 7 years of age. The academic year begins on the 1st of September and lasts till the end of May. It is divided into 4 terms and has 4 vocation periods: autumn, winter, spring and summer ones. There are two official languages within the education system in Belarus: Russian and Belarusian. Primary and basic education are compulsory for all children. Those, who get a Certificate of Secondary Education, have a chance to continue their education at the university level.

2. Would you like to be a teacher? (Is it difficult to be a teacher?)

Well, I know that teaching is a noble occupation and absolutely necessary for our society. But I would never be a teacher for some reasons. First of all, the job is extremely responsible and nervous, (because you do not only teach your subject, but also deal with characters and parents.) I also know that paperwork and extra-school duties take much of your time. And finally, teachers are not well-paid. (So, I really admire you, teachers, for what you are doing for us.)
