International Students: The Most Popular Fields of Study

News alert! We have just received our annual report from the International Review. Each year this publication puts out a statistical report on international student enrollments in various major fields of study.

This year it was no surprise to find that once again the field of engineering had top enrollments with business and management in second place. In third and fourth places are the fields of natural sciences and social sciences. In order, the next four choices are humanities, education, math and computer science, and arts. The last two of the top ten are health professions and agriculture.

The report reveals some interesting changes in major field enrollments last year. Engineering, long a very popular field of study for international students, reached a new height. Enrollment figures increased from 22 percent to nearly 29 percent. Similar increases are found in business and management, which moved up from just over 14 percent to 16 and a half, and math and computer science, up from 3 and a half percent to 5 and a half percent.

b) Fill the spaces with the names of the fields of study, using the information given above.

The percentage enrollments for the top ten fields are as follows:

First: _______ at 28.8 percent. Sixth: ______at 5.6 percent.

Second: _______at 16.5 percent. Seventh: ____at 5.5 percent.

Third: _______ at 9.2 percent. Eighth: _____ at 5.3 percent.

Fourth: _____at 8.9 percent. Ninth: _______ at 4.7 percent.

Fifth: ______at 5.7 percent. Tenth: ________at 3.3 percent.

A. Are most of students men or women, or are they divided fairly equally? F6_____________________ f) The next four most popular fields are dentistry, physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
A. Is that what you usually expect? F7_____________________ g) Yes, although enrollments of international women students have risen steadily over the last five years.
A. Next question. What percentage of total university enrollments are international students? F8_____________________ h) Well, in fact, about 23 percent of the international students are women and 77 percent are men.
A. What is the “country count” for international students? F9_____________________ i) Well, that depends. Some of them speak only a little English when they come, but many of them are really quite fluent already.
A. Interesting. One final question – do most of the students speak English when they come, or do they learn it after they get here? F10____________________ j) Overall, we have students from 101 countries. Taiwan takes top honors with 364 students. Korea is next with 341, followed by the Peope’s Republic of China with 214, India with 159, Canada with 114, and Japan with 112.

Sumy State University takes its founding date as 1948. In 1966 the institution was incorporated as the Sumy Division of Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute. In 1990 the school, which had already become a modern educational complex with a variety of engineering specialities, gained its independence from Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute by state legislative action and began operating as Sumy Institute of Physics and Technology. In August 1993 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine authorized that the name of the institution be changed to Sumy State University, effective September 1, 1993.

The University provides a variety of courses across Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Mathematics, Information Science, Journalism, Linguistics, Material Science, Medicine, Law, Economics, Business and Management, Environmental Science, Power Engineering, etc. to around 20000 Ukrainian and foreign students. About two and a half thousand faculty (teachers) and staff work in various divisions, departments and chairs.
