Each Halloween they tell the story— Sammy and Rollie enjoy the glory. When they're done "remembering when," Why, they all go trick or treat again.
Snake Stew, Hold the Toads
One Halloween our Sammy Snake, Rollie Rattler and cousin Jake Joined the silly viper brothers, Charlie Cobra and the others.
In the glow of the setting sun They left for town to have some fun, To see the ghouls and spooks prepare. They were coming in from everywhere.
The City Park is where ghosts choose To meet and practice booing BOOS. Three goblin cuties led the cheer,
"BOO!! BOO!! Let's get it loud and clear!"
The spiders hummed The Weaving Song, Those hairy beasts were three feet long. Then, suddenly, down from the skies, Dropped sleazy, slippery, slimy guys.
Soon darkness fell like an eyelid closes And sneaky shadows struck their poses As little beggars filled the street— The kids were out for Trick or Treat.
Tikes dressed for fun and looking fine And so the snakes soon joined their line. Each dragged a bag and kept it handy In hopes that it would fill with candy.
The snakes would never hesitate, They'd ring the bell, then stand and wait. When someone came they all would stoop, Then hiss together as a group. The folks all said, "For goodness sakes, You look just like a bunch of snakes. Because your costumes are so neat We'll give you each an extra treat."
Down the street was an eerie light And folks were frightened by the sight. So Rollie and Sam rushed to the spot And all at once felt something hot.
They knew the night might bring big troubles When they saw a pot with boiling bubbles. A witch was scrambling here and there With bulging eyes and scraggly hair.
Wow! Suddenly she moved like "Zoom" And made a quick sweep with her broom. She whipped it up, for goodness sake, There on the broom was cousin Jake. With a toothless smile she let him drop. Poor Jake slid in and went, "Kerplop!!" Yes, Sam was frightened but he knew There must be something he could do.
He looked and saw, to his surprise, The pot was filled with scared snake eyes. The witch announced, "This year the brew Will be my famous Young Snake Stew.
"I boil small snakes of many sorts, Add ugly toads that give big warts. Each time I serve it to a ghost He pours the stew on pale white toast."
As Sammy Snake let out a sigh The viper brothers bubbled by. Then Sam and Rollie made a plan, As Sam crawled off it all began. The crowd and witch all turned with fright For Rollie's rattles chilled the night. He moved around, had them dumbfounded, They thought that snakes had them surrounded.
As Sammy Snake slid from a limb The crowd was looking up at him. And then he stayed suspended there To use his hypnotizing stare.
The witch's eyes were stuck in space, A blank stare spread across her face. And Sammy Snake hissed, mean and low, "Now dump that pot and let them go."
"I'm hurrying," the stunned witch cried, And with her broom stick, pried and pried. It tipped, then bounced and rolled about, The snakes and toads all popping out.
She grabbed her broom and hit the road. She left them all--both snake and toad. Those from the pot then all agreed Their finest treat was being freed.
