THE GERUND AND THE INFINITIVE IN COMPARISON

 

The Gerund and the Infinitive have much in common as they both have some nominal and verbal features. However in the Infinitive the verbal nature is more prominent, while in the Gerund - the nominal one.

 

§ 1. The gerund & the infinitive as subject

 

The basic difference in the meaning of the Gerund and the Infinitive is that the Gerund is more general and the Infinitive is more specific and bound to some particular occasion:

 

Selling insurance is a pretty boring job.

It was difficult to sell my car.

§ 1. The gerund & the infinitive as predicative

The difference is mainly determined by tradition: the Infinitive is more common, yet it occurs only after to be, while the Gerund is found after other link-verbs, esp. after mean:

My plan is to start in the morning.

It is nice to come here again.

I didn’t mean hurting you.

I don’t feel like eating a big meal now.


§ 3. The gerund & the infinitive as object

The choice between the gerund and the infinitive sometimes becomes a problem. There are four groups of verbs and adjectives:

She succeeded in convincing the police that she was not a burglar.

Thank you for telling me the truth

Ex.2. Without referring to a dictionary see how many of the preposition combinations you already know by completing these sentences with an appropriate preposition and verb form.

 

I. Alice isn’t interested (look) for a new job. 2. Henry is excited (leave) for India. 3. You are capable (do) better work. 4. I have no excuse (be) late. 5. I'm accustomed (have) a big breakfast. 6. The rain prevented us (complete) the work. 7. Fred is always complaining (have) a headache. 8. Instead (study), Margaret went to a ballgame with some of her friends. 9. Thank you (help) me carry my suitcases. 10. Mrs. Grant insisted (know) the whole truth. 11. I believe (be) honest at all times. 12. You should take advantage (live) here. 13. § 4. The gerund & the infinitive both possible

 

1. remember, forget, regret, go on

 

 

Ex.3.

 

 

2. allow, advise, forbid, permit + the Gerund if there is no personal object.

+ the Infinitive in complex object:

Sorry, we don’t allow smoking in this lecture room.

We don’t allow people to smoke here.

I wouldn’t advise taking the car - there is nowhere to park.

I wouldn’t advise you to take the car ...

 


Ex.4.Change the sentences, using the words in brackets according to the model.

Model: The doctor advised going to bed. (the patient) The doctor advised the patient to go to bed.

1. The Lovedays don’t permit watching television, (their children) 2. The travel agent recommends going to Italy. (the holiday makers) 3. The law forbids stealing, (people) 4. They forbid smoking, (their children) 14. The lawyer advised pleading quietly, (his client) 15. They don’t allow dancing, (people)

Ex.5. Translate into Russian:

 

1. A broken leg won’t stop me from going to the concert. 2. There is nothing to stop you from asking him. He might agree. 3. Suddenly everyone stopped talking. 4. We stopped walking and went for a drink. 5. I stopped to get a drink of water. 6. Did you ever stop to think what might happen. 7. When it stops raining we will go for a picnic. 8. When Beth got tired she stopped walking.
