BELGOROD STATE UNIVERSITY

 

I am a first year student and I want to tell you a little about my University.

Belgorod State University is one of the oldest educational establishments in our region. Belgorod State University (BSU) continues traditions of training teachers. Its history dates back from 1876 when a Teachers’ College was opened in our town. Later in 1939 it was reorganized into Pedagogical Institute and existed till 1994. In 1996 the institution was granted University status.

The University has one of the largest in the region universal scientific libraries housing more than 600.000 books. BSU has its own publishing house supplied with modern computer equipment. It has a license for publishing activity.

BSU has 2 assembly halls three sport halls, two skiing centers, a shooting gallery, a sport and recreation camp, located out of town. It is the largest scientific, cultural and pedagogical establishments in the south of Russia.

Students have all possibilities to pursue education and engage in the activities of research societies, sport clubs, music, dance, poetry and art groups under the guidance of highly skilled professionals.

Every year a lot of applicants come to our University seeking for admission. Early in September those who were lucky to pass entrance exams and to be enrolled in the first year get together to be initiated into students.

Now a few words about the faculties, the course of training and other things the students are usually interested in.

Today the University has two departments: Day-time department and Extra-Mural department.

The Day-time department includes 15 faculties:

· the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics;

· the Faculty of Philology;

· the Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology;

· the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology;

· the Faculty of Physical Training;

· the Faculty of Pedagogics;

· the Faculty of History;

· the Faculty of Law;

· the Faculty of Medicine;

· the Faculty of Economics;

· the Faculty of Social and Psychological Sciences;

· the Faculty of Social and Theological Sciences;

· the Faculty of Geology and Geography;

· the Faculty of Computer Sciences and Telecommunications;

· the International Faculty.

10 faculties train students to be secondary and primary school teachers. The University provides a good basis for it.

The faculty of Law trains highly-skilled lawyers for juridical bodies.

Young people who really care for medicine enter the faculty of Medicine. The course of studies is 6 years. The students of this faculty master the basis of theoretical and practical medicine to be good doctors in future and treat people for different diseases.

Schoolchildren who are interested in finances, credit and accountancy enter the faculty of Economics. It trains highly qualified specialists for all branches of national economy, banks and commerce.

Those who are interested in psychology and management enter the faculty of social and psychological sciences. This faculty trains practical psychologists for schools and specialists in the sphere of administration and management.



The curriculum of BelSU consists of the subjects students specialize in, educational and social subjects, foreign languages and physical training. Study-rooms are equipped with TV-sets, computers, tape-recorders. Lectures and seminars alternate with laboratory work, research work and self-training.

A lot of foreign students study at the International faculty. Young people learn Russian there.

Students’ practical work is given much attention to.

The University course lasts five years, except the faculty of Medicine. Each academic year is divided into two terms each ending with the examination session. Those who pass the exams successfully get a scholarship.

At present the University has significantly enlarged the foreign contacts and developed new forms of cooperation with foreign educational establishments and it continues to seek new forms of cooperation.

On graduating the students receive diplomas, which give them the right to work on their speciality.
