If you want to go to a universty, you usually apply during your last year at school, when you are 17-18. At the beginning of your last year at school you receiv an application form on wtich you choose up to five universities that you would like to go to.The form is sent to those universities with information from your school about you and your academic record. If the universities are interested in your application, they will ask you to attend an interview; they will offer you a place.

Foreign pupils (Russians and Americans) are to take the two-year Foundation course which presupposes profound studying of English and the main academic subjects on the A-level program.Higher educational institutions of Great Britain are devidedinto four types:

1. Colleges of Higher Education (teaching on the Batchelor program);

2. Polytechnics (engineering specialities)

3. University Colleges (different Batchelor programs)

4. Universities (the centres of academic education and scientific and research work).

On the whole there are about 170 higher educational institutions in the UK, including 102 universities. Undergraduate courses for the Batchelor’s Degree take 3 or four years. In order to get the Master’sDegree one should take another 1-year course, defend a thesis and carry out a research .The doctor of Pfilosophy Degree =PhD presupposes an examination essay and a thesis of the Doctor of Philosophy Degree. The highest degree is the Doctor of Sciences Degree. Oxford and Cambridge are the oldest universities which have a very high reputation all over the world. Each student has a tutor who helps him to plan and organize his work, to selectreading materials and to prepare for exams and his degree. A student selects several subjects for his studies and regularly writes essays and presents them to his tutor for correction and discussion at their regular meetings.
