Russian Machine-Building Plants
The Russian machine-building industry has struggled through the time of the desperate 1990s, when the vast majority of enterprises had to close down or went bankrupt without the governmental support. Some plants stopped manufacturing military goods and turned to civil production, but others survived and here is a short list of them.
Uralmash-Izhora Group
Uralmash-Izhora Group is the Russia’s leading company in the field of the heavy engineering industry. The company focuses on engineering, production, sales and maintenance of equipment and machines for the nuclear power, oil and gas, and mining industries, and also in the production of special steels and equipment for other industries.
The company was founded in 1996 as OJSC Ural Machine-building Plants. In 1999 the company merged with Izhora plants and received a new name of United Machine building Plants (Uralmash-Izhora Group). In 2003, the Czech companies Skoda Steel and Skoda JS joined OMZ.
Uralmash-Izhora Group facilities are located in Russia (Izhora plants) and Czech (Pilsen Steel and Skoda JS). The company employs over 16 500 people. The Group is listed on the stock Exchanges of London, Berlin, Munich and New York.
Established in 1722 by decree of Peter the Great Izhora plants manufactured various products for the Russian navy: anchors, copper plates for ships, etc.
In the first half of the 20th century the plants turned into a diversified enterprise producing cars and dirigibles, tanks, weapons and military equipment, as well as equipment for electric power stations and geologic exploration. During the WWII the enterprise made missiles for Katyusha rocket launchers and repaired armored vehicles.
Thanks to reconstruction works of 1960-1980ss Izhora Plants became the Russia’s only enterprise specializing in production of equipment of primary coolant circuits for nuclear power stations with 440 and 1000MW light water-cooled and moderated reactors. Today Izhora reactor facilities are in operation at 47 NPPs in Russia and CIS, as well as at NPPs in Bulgaria, Slovakia and Finland.
Izhora enterprise is an industrial juggernaut capable of ensuring further development of fuel, mining and petrochemical industries, railway transport and metallurgical industry, road and dock building.
Uralmash plant was put into operation in early 1930s. Machines and equipment produced at the plant laid the basis for domestic metallurgical, mining and oil-producing industries.
During the WWII the plant manufactured armored vehicles, but in 1945 turned back to civil production.
After the reconstruction of 1946, the production capacity of the plant increased several times. Uralmash started mass production of mine excavators and drill rigs.
At the end of the 1980s Uralmash’s equipment processed 85% of iron ore, 50% of non-ferrous metals, two thirds of rails, 90% of tin plates, 100% of electric steel and all solid wheels of rolling stock in the country.

Elemash
OJSV (Elemash) Machine-building plant is the oldest enterprise controlled by the Russian Atomic Energy Agency. The plant was built in the first years of the WWI to produce service ammunition. The first production lot was manufactured on the 28th of February, 1917 – this date is regarded as birthday of the plant.
During the last years of the war the plant was expanding very fast and strengthened its position among munitions factory assuring defense potential of the country. The plant manufactured artillery shells, mines and airbombs for the war industry.
In the late 40s – early 50s the company started implementation of nuclear technologies connected with the development of the “Nuclear shield” of the country. These achievements have been rewarded by the second order of Lenin in 1954.
The year 1954 was the starting point for the development of the new direction in the plant’s activity, viz. fabrication of fuel rods and fuel assemblies for nuclear industry.
The next step in this direction was the fabrication of cores for the marine fleet. In December 1959 the first atomic ice-breaker powered by the nuclear fuel manufacture by the plant was launched (“Lenin” atomic ice-breaker). The full-scale production of fuel rods for nuclear power plants was started in 1965.
Today OJSC Elemash is a leading industrial enterprise of the country and one of the key world manufacturers and suppliers of nuclear fuel to the international market. The company produces nuclear fuel for research reactors and marine fleet. The nuclear fuel produced at Elemash is operated at NPPs in Russia, Armenia, Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Finland, Czech, Switzerland and Sweden.
Besides nuclear fuel the enterprise produces Permanent magnets, metal calcium and stainless steel tubes.

Pavlovsk Machine-building Plant VOSKHOD
The joint-stock company "Pavlovsky Mashinostroitelny Zavod Voskhod" (JSC "PMZ Voskhod") is one of the leading enterprises of the aerospace industry in Russia with more than 58 years experience in the designing, development and manufacture of electro-hydraulic actuators and other electro-hydraulic equipment for flight control systems.

Uralvagonzavod
Uralvagonzavod is a Russian machine building company located in Nizhny Tagil, Russia. It is one of the largest scientific and industrial complexes in Russia and the largest main battle tank manufacturer in the world.
The full name of the company is PLC "Scientific and industrial corporation "UralVagonZavod" (ÎÀÎ «Íàó÷íî-ïðîèçâîäñòâåííàÿ êîðïîðàöèÿ «ÓðàëÂàãîíÇàâîä»). It is a public limited company. The name Óðàëâàãîíçàâîä (Óðàë Âàãîí Çàâîä) means Uralrailroadcarfactory (Ural Railroad car Factory).
Operations
The company's main products include railway cars and tanks, road-building vehicles, metallurgical products, tools and consumer goods.
Production of T-90 main battle tanks accounts for 18–20% of the company's overall production. In 2008, Uralvagozavod produced about 175 tanks: 62 T-90A for the Russian Ministry of Defence, 60 T-90S for India and 53 T-90SA for Algeria. This represents the highest level of tank production at Uralvagonzavod and in Russia as a whole since 1993. Moreover, according to Moscow Defense Brief, it would appear that in 2008 the number of tanks produced by the company was greater than the number of main battle tanks produced in all the other countries of the world taken together.
Railway cars and other civilian production amounted to 2/3 of the company's overall output in 2008.
The company is one of the Russian leaders in developing and manufacturing high-quality machine-building products of world class.
