Grand Canyon

is an area that was made by the Colorado river and it lies in the state of Arizona. The canyon is 446km long and 29 km wide. It is very precious for geologists because they can study the Earth´ s history there. In 1901 the Grand Canyon Railway was built there and it takes people on a journey through the area and back in time. It is an amazing experience.

Yellowstone National Park

wasthe first America´s national park. It lies in the state of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho and it is the oldest, most popular and the largest national park in the USA. It is home to the world´s largest geyser. There are also lakes, hot springs, canyons, rivers and waterfalls and mountains. In the park you can also find wild animals such as a grizzly bear, an American black bear, a wolf, a bison and others. You can visit the park and do different activities there. You can go hiking, camping, boating, fishing and sightseeing. During the winter, visitors can go on a guided tour and use their snow coaches or snowmobiles.

The Redwood Forest and Sequoia National Park

The Redwood National Park is located in California. It is there to protect the redwood trees. They are the tallest trees on Earth. They can be more than 100meters tall. The tallest living tree is called Hyperion and is 115m tall. Redwood trees need a lot of water. The Sequoia NP protects giant sequoia trees. These trees can live for more than 3,000 years and can be more than 76 meters tall. The biggest and most massive is General Sherman tree. Visitors can go hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking and birding there.

Niagara Fall

is the name for three waterfalls: Horseshoe waterfalls, American waterfalls and Bridal Veil Falls. The Horseshoe Falls lie on the Canadian side, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil lie on the American side. The cities – Niagara Falls in Canada and Niagara Falls in the USA are connected by two bridges. It is still a great tourist attraction and a favourite place for honeymooners. The Falls appeared in many films – for example Superman II, Ninja Turtles episode or Pirates of the Caribbean – At World´s End. The famous illusionist David Copperfield performed a trick there – he travelled over the Horseshoe Falls.

Death Valley

lies in the Mohave desert and it is the lowest, driest and hottest place in North America. There are very hot summers and mild winters and it doesn´t rain very often there. There is a story that in the 19^th century gold-seekers (hledačizlata) travelled to California,took a short-cut (zkratka) and got to this area. Fortunately it was winter so it wasn´t so hot there. Two families sent out two men for help and waited for them. When the men returned with a mule (mezek) they led the families out of the valley. When they came up to one of the tops, they looked back and said: “Goodbye Death Valley”. Therefore it is called Death Valley.

Las Vegas

is a popular resort city in the USA. It is famous for gambling and shopping and nightlife. There are plenty of casino-hotels and therefore it is a popular holiday destination. Detroit is famous for the automobile industry. The Ford cars were produced there.

Chicago is a modern city full of skyscrapers. There is also the 2^nd highest building in the Americas – The Willis Tower (the Sears Tower). It lies on Lake Michigan.

Los Angeles is located in California. Many people know Los Angeles because there is the famous district – Hollywood. It is the centre of film production.

New Orleans in Louisiana is the big seaport on the Mississippi River. New Orleans was founded by French and the French origins of the town can be seen in the French Quarter. It is the birthplace of jazz music. The main attraction for visitors is the city’s night life – the night clubs, exotic dancers, unique shows, shops, restaurants and bars. You can go on a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi river and it is an amazing experience.

Great Lakes

is an area of freshwater. There are 5 lakes in the area. They are called Lake Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. They lie on the American – Canadian border. The lakes are important for fishing and many different kinds of fish can be found there.

San Francisco

is a popular place for tourists and it lies in California. It is famous for its cable cars and for a prison called Alcatraz. Alcatraz is an island and because it is surrounded by wild water it was used as a prison. It was very difficult to escape from the prison. Now the prison is not working. The top tourist attraction is the Golden Gate Bridge.

Mount Rushmore

is a large sculpture with the faces of four American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. It is the world´s largest mountain carving (řezby). Each head is as tall as a six-floor building.
