QUALITY OF LLFE IN CROHN'S DISEASE; RESULTS OF A CASE-CONTROL STUDYS. SHIVANANDA, M. VAN BLANKENSTEIN, W.R. SCHOUTEN

Hipothesis: Crohn's disease is a highly debilitating condition and surgery may ameliorate the problem.
Aims of the study: 1. To assess the quality of life of patients with Crohn's disease; 2. To assess patients satisfaction after drug or surgical treatment.
Materlals and methods: The study population in this survey consisted of 120 cases with established Crohn's and disease and 75 neibourhood controls of similar age, sex and social class and no prior history of chronic Gl disease. They were interviewed by trained personnel using measures of health related quality of the of live were of live out lined by Grogono and Woodgate.
The factors in the assessment ol quality of life were: • Global well-being
• Specific complaints in daily life
• Impact of disease on family life
• Impact of disease on employment
• Patients satisfaction after drug or surgical treatment
Results:
Global assessment with Physical Health
1= Completely Satisfied. 2 = Principally Satisfied, 3 = Neither Satisfied nor Dissatisfied,4 = Relatively Dissatisfied, 5 = Very Dissatisfied.
Specific complaints in daily life. Three most important disease related complaints:
Abdominal pain n=76 (63%)
Chronic tiredness n=65 (54%)
Diarrhoea n=63 (52%)
73% had some complaints during remission.This rose to 97% during reactivation.

Patients satisfaction after drug or surgical treatment
Patient's evaluation of the benefits of surgery rapidly declined after the first resection and subsequently remainded uniformly low. However, their estimation of drug treatment improved and remained significantly better (X2=34. p<0.001).
