Want To Be A Playwright?

By Adam Clery on November 13, 2012 in Stage

Becoming a playwright is a bit like the perfect pair of jeans. It’s great when you’ve finally got it, but it can be very difficult to get into. But the Live Theatre, and specifically their beaplywright.com project has made it that much more accessible, and this week their celebrating by including some work by the course’s first ever graduate into a night focussing on new theatre.

KYEO’s Nicola Owen, you may remember from her fantastic feature on Simon Stephens a few weeks ago, took it upon herself to get involved in the course and the work she completed as part of it will be being showcased before Friday’s Theatre Uncut night this Friday the 16th.

“If you’re interested in writing theatre, I’d really recommend it. You need a bit of an ear for dialogue, and possibly already involved in theatre so you’ve got some idea of how things work, what an actor an do on stage, how things are presented when they’re on stage and so on. The very minimum you can get from it is really good feedback from a professional theatre on your work, which is really, really helpful.

“There’s no guarantee of every getting that if you’re just submitting scripts on spec somewhere, but now I’ve got a finished 3 act play that they’re going to be doing extracts of next week, which is terifying. But yeah, you get to finish a play, get it out there, and get feedback. Which means you get to take it seriously.

“Theatres do run in-house workshops and other playwriting-based courses but they tend to be building based so you’ve got to be able to commit to the 8 or 10 weeks or whatever it is, and whatever times they happen to be running. Live still do these, but with the online course as well it opens it up to people who perhaps live further away or don’t have quite as much time spare.

“It’s not a beginners course. You do have to know things about the craft and dialogue and the theatricality of your work. You’ve got to be able answer questions on what you’ve done and look at it critically in your own way so some skills are required. I think I’ve already had my money’s worth and I’ve still got access to it so I can always go back and use it whenever I finish something. I just made sure I did one module a month and I got through it in about 5 months. I’m no genius mind. I only studied up to A-Level, I’ve not nothing up to degree level and I managed it alright.”

Nicola’s work is being shown as part of the Want To Be A Playwright? event on Friday, where Live Theatre’s Literay Manager Gez Casey intorduces the online course and tells prospective scribes what they can expect by taking part (and gives them a cheeky discount). It’s followed up by Theatre Uncut, a special event that allows various national and international directors to bring their raw ideas to the stage to see how they work in front of an actual audience.

Not only that, but on Thursday the 15th Scratch Night is back and, together with The Empty Space, Live Theatre is showcasing work in development from Verity Quinn and Beth Coverdale (the team behind When She Went) and a brand new show from Chris Goode, writer of the Edinburgh Fringe hit The Adventures of Wound Man and Shirley.

Rosie Kellagher, literary officer at Live Theatre explained it better than we can: “This is the audience’s chance to come and watch snippets of new work by some of the most exciting theatre artists from around the country. Theatregoers can then join the writers, directors and artists in the bar afterwards to let them know what they thought – all feedback is welcome so why not come along and have your say on the future of theatre and say you saw it here first. There’ll even be a free glass of wine to get the conversation flowing”.

If you’ve ever wanted to get into writing plays, or just love the theatre in general, these nights might be the most important thing you’ve been to in a while.
